Chair, Department of Surgery
Position Overview
The University of California, Irvine (UCI), in partnership with Grant Cooper, is seeking a Chair for the Department of Surgery. The Chair reports to the Dean of the School of Medicine and manages all administrative and operational processes, supporting clinical services, teaching, education, and research missions. This role involves leading a diverse faculty, staff, and students to enhance the department's national and international reputation.
The Department of Surgery includes 59 surgeon faculty and 4 research faculty, focusing on comprehensive clinical care, research, and education. Faculty engage in translational research, publish in high-impact journals, and secure funding from sources like the National Institutes of Health.

Responsibilities
- Overall responsibility for department management, reporting to the Dean and collaborating with UCI Health leadership.
- Recruitment, management, and evaluation of faculty, ensuring alignment with institutional goals.
- Promoting teamwork within and across departments.
- Developing educational programs for medical students, residents, and fellows.
- Encouraging research creativity and growth, integrating with school-wide goals.
- Leading patient care programs, maintaining standards, and ensuring quality.
- Planning and managing departmental facilities.
- Overseeing finances, budgets, and fundraising.
- Recommending compensation for personnel.
- Advocating for institutional values like accountability and excellence.
- Engaging in community outreach and philanthropy.
Eligibility
- MD or MD/PhD degree (or equivalent).
- Board certification through the American Board of Surgery.
- Eligibility for a California medical license.
- Appointment at the rank of Professor.
- Leadership skills, scholarly record, and ability to collaborate in a diverse setting.

Salary range: $1,019,074 - $1,208,197, including eligibility for additional compensation under the Health Sciences Compensation Plan.
