GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
The Chairperson, History and Social Sciences performs managerial, professional work providing instructional leadership and administrative oversight for an array of disciplinary courses and programs at a comprehensive community college, including History, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Criminal Justice, and Education. Works collaboratively with faculty and staff and with the College’s administrative team to provide a high-quality learning environment for students.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions:
- Establishes a collaborative working environment and fosters effective communications within the department, division, and campus.
- Works in partnership with faculty members to develop best practices for curricula, programs, and related student services.
- Assesses learning outcomes for courses, programs, and services and implements changes, where appropriate.
- Works collaboratively with departmental faculty to develop and approve curriculum, select textbooks, implement new instructional and support materials, and assign courses.
- Hires, supervises, and evaluates full- and part-time faculty and staff.
- Develops reports and budget plans for the department.
- Oversees grant proposals and implementation.
- Participates actively on division and College committees, meetings, and public outreach efforts.
- Provides professional development opportunities for faculty.
- Develops and implements new opportunities for the College to focus on coursework essential for student success and degree attainment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in one of the departmental disciplines
- Three (3) years’ experience teaching at the college level
- Three (3) years’ administrative, supervisory and/or leadership experience at the post-secondary level
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Doctoral degree
- Five (5) years’ experience teaching at the college level.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The work is sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
- Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
- Hearing 2: Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
- Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
- Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
- Talking 1: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Visual Acuity 1: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
SCHEDULE: Twelve (12)-month position, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
RETIREMENT: Pension Eligible
