Chemistry Technician, PGSS Summer 2026 - Mellon College of Science
Job Overview
Carnegie Mellon University is seeking a lab technician to work with the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences (PGSS) program director, chemistry faculty, and the Chemistry Teaching Lab Team. Responsibilities include preparing and safely cleaning up materials for labs and team projects, with opportunities to work directly with students.
Program Dates for PGSS 2026
- Student Arrival & Opening Ceremony: Sunday, June 21, 2026
- Scientific Symposium: Thursday July 23 and Friday July 24, 2026
- Closing Ceremony: Friday July 24, 2026
Core Responsibilities
- Coordinating with program faculty and Chemistry Teaching Lab staff to ensure materials are available for team projects and labs.
- Preparing reagents and materials prior to sessions (MTRF 2:30-5:30pm).
- Ensuring safe storage of reagents and materials at session end.
- Recording glassware breakage.
- Being present during sessions for additional help.
May assist with setup for Opening Ceremony, Scientific Symposium, and/or Closing Ceremony.
Qualifications
- Strong academic records
- Strong communication skills (oral and written)
- Completed sophomore, junior, or senior year in an undergraduate chemistry program
- Demonstrable safety record in chemical safety and chemistry research
- Combination of education and relevant experience may be considered
Requirements
- Successful background check
- PA Child Protection Clearances (Act 153)
