Chief Nursing Executive
This position reports directly to the SVP/COO of UCSF Health. As a key member of executive leadership, the Chief Nurse Executive contributes to the development and implementation of major strategic goals and direction, and provides vision for all aspects of patient and quality of care issues. Ensures integration of services as appropriate across UCSF Health, and alignment with long-range objectives and strategies. Safeguards compliance with internal policies and external regulatory agencies. Ensures professional nursing standards are uniform and maintained across UCSF Health.
The Chief Nurse Executive is also expected to collaborate closely with the Business Unit Presidents at UCSF Health to advance the Nursing function throughout the organization, ensuring cohesive strategies and initiatives that elevate the quality of nursing care while maintaining fiscal responsibility and sustainability.
The Chief Nurse Executive has a patient-first philosophy, fosters strong partnerships with the medical staff, and brings an inclusive and collaborative approach to nursing and patient care services. The Chief Nursing Executive is expected to cultivate modern workforce alignment, lead the training and education curriculum of all nursing staff incorporating evidence-based care, and manage all fiduciary obligations of nursing labor, including effective documentation and time management. This leader will represent UCSF Health nursing internally and externally, serving as the voice of a progressive, modern nursing workforce.
Patient Experience
- Promotes and fosters a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, and the coordination of care among disciplines.
- In conjunction with entity & Business Unit leadership and the Patient Experience Department, develops and supports programs to enhance the patient experience across UCSF Health including affiliates.
Our People
- Develops programs for recruitment, retention, training and evaluation of staff as well as overseeing and supporting talent development of nursing leadership to ensure succession planning, mentorship and coaching within departments leading to strategic goal accomplishment.
- Provides recommendations regarding compensation and benefit programs for nursing staff.
- Facilitates organizational performance by executing strategies that promote workforce diversity, work-life support and management excellence in partnership with the Business Unit Presidents.
- Provides system leadership in the establishment and oversight credentialing/privileging policies for nurses and ensures compliance with such policies for nurses who seek to practice and who practice at UCSF Health.
- Create innovative models of nursing including remote virtual intakes and discharges, etc.
Quality and Safety
- Articulates the health system vision and priorities and is accountable for outcomes for patient care quality and safety in collaboration with the Vice President of Quality and other health system leaders.
- Directs compliance programs to ensure provision of highest quality services in an efficient, cost-effective manner and within internal and external regulations.
- In conjunction with Entity & Business Unit leadership, accountable for the design, implementation and systems for UCSF Health patient care policies and procedures to assure continuity and consistency of care delivery.
- Assures that the Health System patient care delivery model(s), clinical and staffing standards for nursing and patient care are consistent with current research and professional standards and with the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
- Accountable for the structures and processes that support the infrastructure for nursing and clinical research across UCSF (coordinated with the Dean, School of Nursing and Dean, Medical School, Business Units).
Financial Strength
- Provides strategic direction regarding centralized use of temporary services that provide nursing care; negotiates, monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of agency contractual agreements.
- In conjunction with other UCSF Health Executive & Business Unit leadership, participates in strategic planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical programs and services, assuring appropriate resources for the delivery of care.
- Ensures appropriate nurse staffing for all services within the health system and addresses top of license gaps within any department or unit.
Strategic Growth
- Identifies and articulates the vision and strategic direction for the delivery of patient care and the discipline of Nursing across all patient care settings for UCSF Health and its clinical affiliates; directs and collaborates on the implementation of strategies to achieve them.
Leadership and Learning
- Ensures Magnet designation for UCSF Medical Center and will assist other CNOs (Children's, LPPHC) in attaining Magnet designation.
- Accountable for the structures and processes that support the infrastructure for nursing research across the health system (coordinated with the Dean, School of Nursing).
- Liaises with UCSF School of Nursing and participates in and supports clinical teaching and research activities of the UCSF faculty and staff.
- Chairs the Committee on Interdisciplinary Practice.
- Serves as a member of the Chancellor's Governance Advisory Council, Senior Leadership Council, Operations Council, Clinical Services Executive Board and other standing committees.
- Represents UCSF Health with UCSF Campus, UC System-wide and the community at large.
The salary range for this position is $575,000 - $630,000 annually, depending on experience. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
