Circulation Desk Assistant
Job Details
The principal role of the Circulation Desk Student Assistant is to provide excellent customer service within the Ehrhorn Law Library by answering basic directional, resource, and technical-related requests from all library users. This is a position that demands courteous and polite interactions with the service population, and an obvious, vigilant posture while staffing the service desk. This position reports to the Access Services Coordinator/Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides excellent customer service by answering library user questions in person and on the phone, reserving study rooms for law students and faculty, and locating physical and electronic resources for checkout or in-library use.
- Maintains and cares for library spaces and resources by completing hourly counts, reshelving and shifting books, checking printer supplies, reading the shelves, updating legal texts, and cleaning the library.
- Performs the general duties listed above with the goal of maintaining a clean and clutter-free environment conducive to study.
- Completes special projects assigned by the Access Services Coordinator/Supervisor.
- Keeps a vigilant posture while staffing the Library Service Desk to identify patrons who may need assistance and/or those who may be exhibiting behavior that is problematic to others.
- Demonstrates the ability to work in and with diverse populations, supporting an inclusive environment.
- Strictly adheres to Liberty University policies, representing the University in an exemplary manner.
- Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s Christian model and Mission – Training Champions for Christ.
- Complies with the Liberty University School of Law business casual dress code.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS
Education and Experience
- Grade point average of 3.0 or above is preferred.
- One semester of college education is required.
- Federal Work Study status is preferred
- Previous customer service experience preferred.
- Some knowledge of the Library of Congress classification and call number system preferred.

- Ability to communicate in an effective, professional manner in a customer service setting to convey clear, well-articulated information to Liberty University School of Law’s community, patrons, and associates.
- Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment and discretion.
- Promptness and reliability to follow scheduled hours.
- Willingness to communicate library policy to users.
- Displays an attitude of courtesy, respect, and tact in dealing with others.
- Ability to read call number labels quickly and accurately.
Problem Solving
- Ability to reason intuitively, analyze information and events, and apply judgment to solve routine, complex problems.
- Ability to efficiently prioritize and complete tasks.
- Ability to resolve potentially problematic issues with patrons.
Physical and Sensory Abilities
- Occasionally required to travel to other areas of Green Hall.
- Frequently required to sit for extended periods to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard.
- Regularly required to see, hear, and speak in order to effectively communicate with patrons.
- Regularly required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the building.
- Regularly required to handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
- Regularly required to lift 40 or fewer pounds and push book carts weighing up to 250 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work Environment
The working environment where an individual performs the essential functions of this position is in a climate-controlled office setting. It is well-lit and the noise level is moderate.
Work Hours
Candidates must be open to the possibility of working late evenings and/or weekends and must have safe transportation available to them at those times. Minimum weekly hours 12; maximum weekly hours 18.
