The role

Commencing in 2024, Deakin School of Medicine’s Rural Training Stream offers residents of western and southwestern Victoria the opportunity to complete the Doctor of Medicine course while remaining living in their rural communities. Years 1 and 2 are delivered through a blend of remote online and face-to-face learning activities, with face-to-face learning occurring weekly at rural learning campuses in Ararat and Warrnambool.

The Lecturer in Indigenous Health will work as part of the Indigenous Health Team and collaborate with academic and professional staff across the School of Medicine to support the establishment of this new place-based approach to rural medical education. The appointee will apply their expert knowledge and contribute to the development and delivery of the School’s educational programs. They will support the School’s leadership to develop and nurture close and respectful relationships with local Aboriginal Communities and organisations across western Victoria. They will contribute to the recruitment and support of Indigenous students for all of the School’s programs and to ensuring that all graduates have the required capabilities to impact positively on the health of Australia’s First Peoples.

As a Lecturer, you will:

  • Make a significant contribution to the design, implementation and evaluation of learning and assessment activities in Indigenous Health across the School’s courses, with a focus on the design and delivery of the Indigenous Health curriculum within the Rural Training Stream
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of experiential learning opportunities in Indigenous health services and other clinical settings relevant to the development of Indigenous health expertise, embedding these opportunities within the context of the Rural Training Stream
  • Advise and support students as required, to optimise their learning and wellbeing, with a particular focus on s Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students
  • Provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with a culturally safe learning environment and relevant personal, academic and cultural support.

  • Who are of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent; and
  • Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • Accepted as such by Aboriginal Community in which you live or which you once lived.

Qualifications and experience

  • A health professional or education degree, or relevant education with experience in a related field such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice, health promotion, public health, or education
  • Experience in education in relation to Indigenous health
  • Ability to contribute effectively to the School’s programs in a manner that influences, motivates, and inspires all students to learn
  • A deep knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and people with evidence of the ability to contribute to setting the education agenda in the area of Indigenous health within a tertiary environment
  • Established connections with First Peoples Communities in the School of Medicine’s geographical footprint in western Victoria. (Desirable)
  • Demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, values, well-being, customs and kinship. (Desirable)

Special requirements:

  • The incumbent must live and work within an area designated as Modified Monash 2-7 (Health Workforce Locator | Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care)
  • Occasional travel will be required within Victoria, primarily to Deakin’s Waurn Ponds campus and other rural teaching sites.
