Clinical Assistant Professor - American Sign Language (ASL), Non-Tenure Track
New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development invites applications for a continuing contract (non-tenure track) Clinical Assistant Professor in Teaching and Learning with a specialization in American Sign Language to begin on 9/1/2026. The appointed faculty member will be a member of the Department of Teaching and Learning with an affiliation in Special Education.
- The primary responsibilities of this faculty member are to offer courses developing proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
- We seek applicants who are fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) (National Certification in ASL, ASLTA certification, or RID-certified strongly preferred) and have pedagogical expertise in teaching ASL (beginner and advanced courses), as well as one or more of the following subjects: deaf culture, special education, inclusive pedagogy, linguistics, or related fields. Candidates must demonstrate strong cross-cultural understanding.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be an excellent teacher, advisor, and mentor to undergraduate and/or graduate students; participate in program and curricular development; and serve on program, department, School, and University committees. Clinical Faculty may also engage in scholarly work or creative production.
Candidates should have a Doctorate in Deaf Education or a related field, and knowledge of special education policies and teaching methods. They should also be fluent in ASL and able to teach beginner to advanced level ASL courses. Preferred qualifications: field-based pedagogical experience specifically tailored to the instructional needs of students who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing within educational settings, familiar with both Signing Naturally and TRUE+Way ASL.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $74,000-$114,000.
