Clinical Assistant Professor, Musical Theatre

Job Description

Manhattanville University's School of Arts and Sciences seeks an outstanding candidate for a clinical assistant professor of musical theatre. The ideal candidate will be committed to quality teaching and advisement of undergraduate students, collaborating across disciplines, and serving the institution, program, profession, and community. In addition, candidates must exhibit an eagerness to maintain the program's enrollment through prospective and current student recruitment, community engagement, and experiential learning opportunities. This renewable position supports our vibrant musical theatre program and contributes to the school's commitment to interdisciplinary and inclusive pedagogy. This position carries a teaching load of 30 credits per academic year with possible release time for non-teaching activities.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate courses in musical theatre performance, including Music Theory I and II, Piano I and II, and Musical Theatre Ensemble.
  • Develop and deliver engaging, accessible courses.
  • Music direct one fully produced musical per academic year.
  • Coordinate the new works initiative, including music directing one 29 Hour Workshop musical per academic year.
  • Mentor students in performance, audition preparation, and career development.
  • Provide academic and career advisement to undergraduate students.
  • Collaborate with faculty across disciplines to support programmatic and school-wide initiatives.
  • Contribute to program, school, and college-wide service, including student recruitment, curriculum development, and committee work.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent pianist.
  • Ability to coach both classical and musical theatre repertoire.
  • Knowledge of musical theatre repertoire.
  • Proficient with choral ensembles.
  • Proficient in Mainstage, QLab and Dorico.
  • Interest in developing new works and/or interdisciplinary collaborations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a liberal arts environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Qualifications:

Education:

MFA in Musical Theatre with an emphasis in conducting or music direction, MM in Piano or Musical Theater Conducting, or closely related field.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching musical theatre at the undergraduate level.
  • Professional experience in music direction for musical theatre.
  • Commitment to inclusive teaching practices and fostering diverse perspectives in the classroom and on stage.
  • Professional experience as a vocal coach in both classical and musical theater style.

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Hours Expectation:

Full-time, 35 hours per week
