Description

The Clinical Instructor (CI) has responsibility for teaching primarily in clinically focused courses and incorporates evidence-based practice into teaching activities. The CI serves as a vital link between the school, the student, and the preceptor, ensuring a cohesive and enriching educational experience to ensure alignment of course objectives and program goals. The CI reports to the Course Coordinator and Track Director and works closely with other faculty members and students.

Position Term

The position term is a semester in duration and renewed based on the program's needs, satisfactory clinical evaluations and on the approval of the Track, Associate, and/or Program Director.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Guide, evaluate, and oversee the attainment of clinical competencies for students precepted in clinical settings.
  • Prepare for and actively participate in scheduled onsite and virtual student laboratory and clinical immersion/simulations as scheduled, including orientation/faculty training for lab/clinical simulation, and check-ins with the clinical course coordinator(s).
  • Student Engagement: Conduct weekly check-ins with students in an online clinical course, using available communication through phone or virtual communication platforms.
  • Establish contact with the clinical preceptor at the beginning of the semester, prior to mid-term, and at the end of the semester, and as needed. Document all interactions with students and preceptors and ensure any issues are addressed promptly.
  • Review clinical hours and grade patient logs providing constructive feedback to facilitate student learning and development on a weekly basis.
  • Grade student assignments in a timely manner, providing constructive feedback to support learning.
  • Clinical Evaluation Tool: Ensure that the Clinical Evaluation Tool (CET) is completed at midterm and end of the semester and review findings with the student and Course Coordinator. Report any subpar CET evaluations to the Course Coordinator.
  • Identify students ‘at risk’ for not meeting clinical course outcomes and collaborate to develop to assist with corrective action plans and remediation strategies to support student success and ensure competency attainment. All remediation strategies must be reviewed and discussed with the Course Coordinator/Track Director prior to implementation.
  • Review and validate student clinical hours and preceptor verification of clinical hours every two weeks.
  • Check official Johns Hopkins University (JHU) email daily and respond to students within 48 business hours to maintain timely and professional communication.
  • Site Evaluations: Complete clinical site evaluations each semester, documenting strengths and areas of improvement.
  • Conduct local site visits for assigned student(s), or virtual site visits for students at a distance, if indicated.
  • Teaching in the online environment requires proficiency and adaptability in utilizing online platforms and digital tools. CI’s must be able to demonstrate the ability and flexibility to effectively use the school’s software programs and embrace new technologies. The CI should be able to guide students and preceptors in navigating these systems for communication, documentation, and evaluation, to ensure seamless integration of digital tools into the clinical learning experience.

Clinical Instructors will:

  • Maintain current clinical competency and knowledge of current evidence in the literature required to effectively evaluate and support student performance in the clinical settings assigned.
  • Utilize and apply best practices to create an optimal learning environment that fosters student engagement, achievement of clinical learning objectives, and supports professional growth.
  • Stay abreast of emerging clinical trends and integrate the latest evidence-based practices into teaching and clinical instruction to reinforce high standards of practice and optimize patient care outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in nursing is required; doctoral degree in nursing is preferred.
  • Active, unencumbered RN and APRN license, along with certification in the specialty hiring area with a minimum of 2 years of direct care experience in the advanced practice role.
  • Previous experience as a clinical educator or preceptor is preferred.
  • The role requires strong organizational skills, and excellent written and oral interpersonal communication skills. Candidates must display a high degree of professionalism and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse partners.

Position

This position is primarily remote, except for attending onsite immersions in person, for which the clinical instructors are expected to attend in their entirety. All travel expenses associated with attending onsite activities are the responsibility of the CI

The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range.
