About the role:

The post holder will support and lead the clinical development of novel vaccine candidates, contributing to both industry- and investigator-led early-phase trials aimed at preventing and controlling infectious diseases. The focus will be on mRNA vaccine safety and efficacy, trial design and conduct, and research into immune-biology.

Working under Professor Marta Boffito and Professor Robin Shattock, the Clinical Vaccinology Fellow will ensure studies meet ethical and regulatory standards. There will be opportunities to present at national and international conferences, contribute to publications, and potentially work toward a higher degree (MD or PhD).

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated physician to develop expertise in clinical research and vaccine development, and make a meaningful impact in the field of vaccinology.

What you would be doing:

The post holder will hold an honorary clinical contract with the relevant NHS Trust(s) and take on clinical responsibilities aligned with their experience. Key duties include:

  • Contributing to trial design, protocol development, and data collection planning
  • Recruiting and enrolling participants, including informed consent
  • Conducting clinical assessments, collecting samples, and managing study data
  • Monitoring participant safety and managing adverse events
  • Maintaining ongoing communication with participants
  • Collaborating with and supporting training of the study team to ensure ethical, regulatory compliance
  • Developing personal research interests in microbiology, immunology, and vaccinology
  • Contributing to new, nested research ideas within ongoing studies

What we are looking for:

Essential Requirements

  • Medical degree with GMC registration and MRCP (or equivalent)
  • ALS certified; clinical experience in internal medicine and infection-related fields
  • Interest in and commitment to clinical research
  • Able to provide safe patient care in clinical trials
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and organisational skills

Desirable Requirements

  • Trainee in infection/immunology or IMT3 with MRCP
  • Knowledge of GCP, research governance, and vaccinology developments
  • Experience in vaccine or infection-related clinical research
  • Data analysis, scientific writing, and interest in academic development
