"Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Hand Surgery"

About the Role

We are seeking a clinician-academic with the vision and drive to develop a substantial research programme in Hand Surgery, integrating clinical expertise with data science, digital health, and quantitative methods. The successful candidate will lead internationally recognised research, producing publications of national and international significance, securing external funding, and building a team of PhD students and early-career researchers. They will translate research findings into clinical practice and policy, engaging with healthcare partners, industry, and public stakeholders. Clinically, the post-holder will provide orthopaedic care in outpatient clinics and participate in the consultant on-call rota, contributing to audit, quality improvement, and service development. The role also includes mentoring colleagues and supporting strategic initiatives to foster research excellence across the Bone & Joint Health Centre.

About You

Applicants will hold a PhD or MD and a UK-registerable medical qualification (GMC registration), along with CCT in Trauma & Orthopaedics and a TIG Fellowship in Hand Surgery (or equivalent). A strong track record of high-quality research in Hand Surgery, ideally combining clinical expertise with data-driven approaches, is essential, as is experience in developing research proposals, securing funding, and supervising postgraduate students. Broad clinical expertise, a commitment to clinical governance and patient safety, and excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills are also required.

About the Institute

The Blizard Institute was established in 2003 and is one of six Institutes within the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. The Institute comprises approximately 360 staff based in four academic Centres and one Public Engagement Centre and supports a combined total of c700 postgraduate research and taught students. The Institute aims to deliver excellence in all aspects of research, teaching and clinical service.
