Overview

Independently perform routine complex molecular analysis of human biological materials, including fresh and fixed specimens. Job duties include the following responsibilities: pre-analytical work such as assessing clinical sample quality and appropriateness for analytical testing, analytical work such as extensive and manual specimen manipulation, pipetting, and molecular detection methods, and post-analytical work such as data analysis, quality control and documentation of results. Knowledge of principles and techniques of clinical and pathology molecular laboratory testing procedures (i.e. DNA/RNA extraction, DNA/RNA library preparation; NGS, Target amplification, Quantitative PCR/rtPCR, and other molecular techniques) preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities include

  • Evaluate specimens received by the laboratory and help organize workflow to provide optimum efficiency of testing and turnaround time of results
  • Wear appropriate levels of PPE including those needed while working with potential infectious agents in a BLS2+ biosafety hood
  • Extract and purify nucleic acid from assorted specimen types, including fresh and fixed tissues, following established procedures
  • Perform PCR , RT-PCR, and qPCR on specimens following established protocols
  • Perform real-time PCR for Covid-19
  • Perform a variety of molecular detection methods such as NGS, Sanger Sequencing and Fragment Analysis
  • Perform hybridization techniques, such as FISH, following established procedures
  • Maintain detailed records of testing and any corrective actions/deviations in adherence to CLIA/CAP regulations.
  • Perform quality control procedures
  • Enter data into laboratory computer databases
  • Maintain test result records and assist in archival of data according to standard operating procedures
  • Ensure records are complete for use in laboratory/departmental quality assurance system
  • Setup and operate complex laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain, clean, and calibrate equipment by performing routine assigned maintenance activities. Assists in troubleshooting equipment issues and coordinating with technical support.
  • Evaluate inventory of supplies and reagents and communicate order needs
  • Maintain a neat and clean work environment
  • Follow all departmental/laboratory regulations, policies and procedures
  • Use effective communication between laboratory staff and laboratory management to maintain efficient processes in the laboratory
  • Participate in lab meetings and generate ideas for improving efficiency and productivity in the lab’s operations
  • Participate in continuing education activities associated with relevant professional licenses or certifications
  • Provide cross-coverage and support in other laboratory areas as operational needs require, with appropriate training provided

Required Skills and Abilities

  1. Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology; must be able to identify origin type of body tissue. Proven ability to process and prepare high quality microscopic slides for medical diagnosis and work in all areas of routine and special molecular diagnostics.
  2. Demonstrated ability to perform selection, preparation and submission of samples for molecular analysis by a Pathologist.
  3. Well-developed communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to work effectively and independently as a professional and function autonomously within programmatic guidelines.
  4. Proven organizational and interpersonal skills. Able to work under pressure in a fast paced, clinical care laboratory. Must be able to adhere and follow all safety and HIPAA policies.
  5. Ability to analyze run data and assess quality to verify performance of clinical assay, and perform proficiency testing for assigned tests/equipment to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies

Preferred Skills and Abilities

  1. ASCP certification in MT, MLS, or MB

Principal Responsibilities

  1. Performs specialized laboratory tests and procedures in such areas as histology, cytology, cytogenics, medical technology, and histocompatibility. Records results. Interprets and analyzes results of test and procedures. 2. Tests for and ensures quality control of slides, specimens and cultures. Sets up, operates and maintains laboratory equipment. 3. Oversees and instructs support staff. Serves as a source of information on specialized laboratory techniques and equipment operation. 4. Prepares specimens, tissue, bodily fluid samples, and other matter for analysis and diagnosis using specialized laboratory techniques. 5. Stains and mounts slides, prepares specialized solutions and media; and cultures tissues. 6. Develops and modifies laboratory techniques and procedures. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. May photograph specimens and other matter and develop film. 7. Performs additional functions incidental to laboratory activities.

Required Education and Experience

Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree, or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
