Clinical Veterinarian

JOB SUMMARY

This full-time Clinical Veterinarian position is primarily clinical, providing veterinary care and veterinary services in support of the organization’s research mission. The Clinical Veterinarian will provide daily support to diagnose, treat, and manage clinical cases identified in the research colonies; assist with disease surveillance and prevention programs; participate in various activities to ensure compliance with regulations and guidelines; and assist the Director with administration and management of the animal care and use program. In addition, the successful candidate will provide professional service primarily in the areas of anesthesia and surgery and will oversee post-operative care of animals in support of specific research programs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides direct veterinary care.
  • Consults with and instructs investigators on the diagnosis and treatment of animals; prevention health programs; selection of animal models; selection and administration of anesthetics, analgesics, and tranquilizers; and planning and conduct of animal surgical procedures.
  • Assists in development of training programs and participates in training of individuals who work with animals to meet regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Manage preventive health programs.
  • Advises and mentors support staff to foster their understanding of their role in animal care program processes.
  • Collaborates with administrators, faculty, animal care staff, and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to evaluate facilities and practices and to recommend practical and effective animal care and use procedures and maintenance systems.
  • Provides veterinary pre-review of IACUC protocols. May serve as a voting member of the IACUC.
  • Provide cross-campus support for UConn Health, UConn Storrs, and UConn regional campuses as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (VMD/DVM) Degree from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) or Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) certificate and license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state in the United States with ability to obtain CT licensure upon hire.
  2. Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire, controlled substance licensure in the State of Connecticut.
  3. Board certification/eligibility in laboratory animal medicine or 3-5 years of relevant private practice experience (e.g., exotic and small animal practice).
  4. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, with a proven track record of leading presentations.
  5. Demonstrated experience utilizing analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with an aptitude for detailed work.
  6. Experience with computer software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. USDA accredited veterinarian.
  2. Evidence of completion of advanced training in laboratory animal medicine; veterinary anesthesiology, surgery or emergency medicine; or other relevant veterinary specialties.
  3. Experience working with agricultural and/or wildlife species in research, husbandry, or field settings is a plus.
