Offer Description
The establishment of a CNRS Junior Professor Chair in Neutron Science occurs at a critical moment for Europe marked by a major transition: the gradual replacement of nuclear reactors dedicated to neutron production with next-generation facilities based on proton accelerators. This shift requires France—and the CNRS in particular—to strengthen its expertise in order to maintain its leadership in a field critical to condensed matter research, materials science, and emerging technologies. The Chair aims to develop and leverage the scientific and instrumental opportunities offered by two strategic projects: first, the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, currently under construction, where the french community is contributing to the development of 5 out of the 14 instruments that will be open to the international community in 2027; and second, the French compact pulsed neutron source project ICONE, in which the LLB plays a leading role.
The two laboratories that could host the InnovSON Junior Professor Chair laureate are the Laboratoire Léon Brillouin (LLB) in Saclay (www-llb.cea.fr) and the Laboratoire de Physique des Solides (LPS) in Orsay (www.lps.u-psud.fr). The LLB is a unique research center in France dedicated to exploring matter through neutron scattering. The LPS is a leading laboratory in condensed matter physics, with recognized expertise in neutron science. Both laboratories use neutron beams to probe the structure and dynamics of materials. They investigate the fundamental properties of materials, including superconductivity, magnetism, interfaces, nanoscience, complex matter, and biological systems.
The selected candidate will lead research that bridges fundamental science and innovation, exploiting the unique capabilities of neutron scattering. The project will explore materials and/or molecular architectures that dynamically interact with their environment in response to physical, chemical, or biological stimuli. Their functionalities may arise from electronic, quantum, magnetic, optical, thermal, or biological properties. The work will also address major European challenges—such as digital transformation, climate, energy, and health—or leverage future European neutron sources. Teaching will focus on large-scale instruments at Université Paris-Saclay.
Candidates must propose a teaching project (28 hours of lectures or 42 hours of laboratory or tutorial work) related to the broad themes of the InnovSON Junior Professor Chair. This teaching project will then be discussed and finalized with the university supervising the laboratory to which the successful candidate is assigned
The CNRS is developing a strong policy in favor of open science. Open science consists of making research results "as accessible as possible and closed as necessary". As such, the CNRS aims to make 100% of the texts of publications resulting from the work of its laboratories accessible , in particular through deposit in HAL. The data produced must also be made available and reusable, except for specific restrictions. In addition, the guiding principles of individual evaluation have been revised in accordance with the DORA declaration, to be more qualitative and to take into account all facets of the researcher's profession.
The dissemination of the results will be done through world-class scientific productions: publications, patents, software... In addition, the results will be communicated to various targets such as scientific communities, media, decision makers, general public, schools, etc., with an adapted calendar. Specific tools may be developed such as websites, newsletters, meetings, international symposia, summer schools and conferences.
The relationship between science and society is now recognized as a full dimension of scientific activity. The project will develop this dimension in synergy with all the partners. The resulting research work will contribute to informing public decision-making. Participatory science initiatives may be initiated with actors from the project's socio-economic and cultural eco-system.
