Co-Director, Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST)
We are seeking an accomplished physician scientist and academic leader to serve as HMS Co-Director of HST. In this role, you will partner with the MIT Co-Director to guide the strategic and day-to-day direction of a unique joint program that trains the next generation of physician scientists, physician engineers, and innovators.
This position offers the opportunity to shape the future of medical education at the intersection of science, engineering, and medicine, while mentoring and inspiring talented MD and PhD students. It provides a platform to lead and collaborate across Harvard and MIT, building bridges for discovery and innovation.
Reporting to the Dean of Medical Education, the role is ideal for a physician scientist who thrives at the intersection of medicine, science, and engineering, and enjoys collaborative leadership. This is a part-time (17.5 hours/week), benefits-eligible leadership role based at Harvard Medical School, with potential for additional effort at an HMS affiliate.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead curriculum design, delivery, and review for HST MD students.
- Recruit, support, and evaluate HST teaching faculty and teaching assistants.
- Oversee HMS HST faculty involved in admissions, advising, and student support.
- Mentor HST MD students and assess student performance, behavior, and professionalism.
- Collaborate with the MIT Co-Director to manage faculty recruitment, program administration, and staff supervision.
- Serve as Advisory Dean of the Irving London Society, fostering community and supporting student well-being.
- Contribute to fundraising, budget development, and long-term strategic planning.
- Represent HST at HMS, MIT, and University-wide committees and leadership meetings.
- Teach on an ad hoc basis within HST courses at HMS and MIT.
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
- MD or MD-PhD.
- 10+ years of administrative, managerial, and budgetary experience in complex, matrixed organizations.
- Qualifications for an appointment as Professor or Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School.
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
- Established record as a physician-scientist with excellence in teaching, mentoring, and research.
- Proven administrative leadership experience and ability to navigate complex organizations.
- Familiarity with the HST program and its mission is strongly preferred.
Additional Information: This is a 5-year term position from the date of hire, with possibility of extension. Standard hours: 17.5 hours per week. Harvard University cannot provide visa sponsorship.
