The Harvard MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST) is one of the world’s leading collaborations at the crossroads of medicine, science, and engineering. Bringing together Harvard Medical School (HMS), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Boston’s renowned teaching hospitals, HST educates exceptional students, advances biomedical knowledge, and shapes leaders who are redefining human health.

Job Description

We are seeking an accomplished physician scientist and academic leader to serve as HMS Co Director of HST. In this highly visible role, you will partner with the MIT Co Director to guide the strategic and day to day direction of a unique joint program that trains the next generation of physician scientists, physician engineers and innovators.

This position offers the opportunity to shape the future of medical education at the intersection of science, engineering, and medicine, while mentoring and inspiring some of the most talented MD and PhD students in the world. It provides a unique platform to lead and collaborate across two premier institutions, building bridges that drive discovery and innovation, and to represent HST to external partners and stakeholders in ways that strengthen and expand its impact.

Reporting to the Dean of Medical Education and responsible to several governing bodies, the role is ideal for a physician scientist who thrives at the intersection of medicine, science, and engineering, is energized by teaching and mentoring exceptional students, and enjoys collaborative leadership across world class institutions. It is well suited for someone who wants to influence the future of health and biomedical innovation while continuing to advance their own academic contributions.

This is a parttime (17.5 hours/week), benefits eligible leadership role based at Harvard Medical School, with close collaboration across MIT and Boston’s hospitals. Part-Time or Full-Time designation will be dependent on whether there will be additional effort at an HMS affiliate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead curriculum design, delivery, and review for HST MD students.
  • Recruit, support, and evaluate HST teaching faculty and teaching assistants.
  • Oversee HMS HST faculty involved in admissions, advising, and student support.
  • Mentor HST MD students and assess student performance, behavior, and professionalism.
  • Collaborate with the MIT Co Director to manage faculty recruitment, program administration, and staff supervision.
  • Serve as Advisory Dean of the Irving London Society, fostering community and supporting student well-being.
  • Contribute to fundraising, budget development, and long-term strategic planning.
  • Represent HST at HMS, MIT, and University wide committees and leadership meetings.
  • Teach on an ad hoc basis within HST courses at HMS and MIT.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • MD or MD-PhD.
  • 10+ years’ administrative, managerial, and budgetary experience in complex, matrixed organizations.
  • Qualifications for an appointment as Professor or Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School, commensurate with academic accomplishments.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Established record as a physician-scientist, with demonstrated excellence in teaching, mentoring, and research.
  • Proven administrative leadership experience; ability to navigate complex organizations.
  • Familiarity with the HST program and its mission is strongly preferred.

Work Format Details

This position is based on-site at a Harvard campus location. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
