Coherent Soft X-ray (CSX) Scattering Beamline Post-Doctoral Research Associate
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Taking advantage of the unique qualities of the CSX beamline, the selected candidate will perform scientific research aligned with the beamline scientific program and, if possible, bring new scientific directions. The selected candidate will provide user support and will contribute to the beamline development activities. As a member of the Electronic Structure Techniques (EST) program, the candidate is welcome to collaborate with other members of the group, as well as to utilize complementary research opportunities at other beamlines of the program, and of the facility in general, for pursuing a personal scientific path, compatible with the beamline needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Carry out scientific research in correlated and quantum materials, utilizing the unique beamline capabilities and facility opportunities
- Provide users with the support and capabilities needed to achieve and complete high-impact experiments performed at CSX
- Contribute to instrumentation upgrade activities to fulfill the scientific demand and maintain the beamline performances to the forefront
- Collaborate with a wide range of researchers across a variety of disciplines within BNL and externally
- Publish and presents the results of these studies to the community
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science or related fields
- Prior experience relevant to this position, such as in synchrotron-based techniques
- Understanding of strongly correlated electron systems
- Demonstrated analytical skills, data analysis experience
- Demonstrated record of scientific contribution through publications and talks in related fields
- Ability to interact effectively in a team environment with a diverse group of scientists and users
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, self-motivation
- Experience in modern programming language
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience in X-ray absorption (XAS) and/or scattering techniques, such as X-ray, electron, or neutron scattering
- Experience in scattering constructions (Ewald sphere, diffraction geometries and conditions)
- Experience in advanced scattering (resonant, tensorial scattering, multiple scattering, coherence)
- Experience in single crystal alignment, low dimensional samples, and flakes/stacks
- Experience in imaging and reconstruction techniques
- Experience in X-ray optics, X-ray detectors, ultra-high vacuum instrumentation
- Experience in Python programming
OTHER INFORMATION:
BNL policy requires that after obtaining their PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.
Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $74,000.00 - $88,000.00 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
