Communications & Operations Specialist
Job Summary
Career Exploration & Development (CED) at Oberlin College empowers students and recent alumni to identify and pursue meaningful career paths rooted in their liberal arts education. We support exploration across diverse fields, including business, arts, education, nonprofit work, environmental sustainability, healthcare, law, public policy, and social justice.
The Communications & Operations Specialist plays a vital role in promoting CED's programs and ensuring the smooth operation of its day-to-day functions. This position oversees communications strategy, digital content, marketing design, and event coordination. It also supports operational processes, including technology platforms and reporting systems, and represents CED on the divisional Operations and Planning Advisory Group (OPAG). This position reports directly to the Executive Director.
Responsibilities
Communications & Marketing
- Develop and implement marketing and branding strategies to promote CED programs, services, and initiatives.
- Create engaging promotional materials for students, alumni, and employers that highlight signature initiatives, including the Ashby Business Scholars Program, Internship+ Program, Senior Launch Series, Winter Term, and Summer Funding.
- Coordinate CED's digital communications, including weekly newsletters, Instagram posts, and mass emails.
- Oversee the student communication and marketing assistant.
- Manage and update the department's website, and troubleshoot issues in collaboration with the Communications and CIT teams.
- Collaborate with the Alumni and Parent Engagement team to produce the annual Career Insights digital booklet.
- Coordinate with campus offices (Student Affairs, Undergraduate Research, CELA, and the Conservatory) to promote and market joint collaborative projects.
Event Planning & Support
- Maintain an office-wide calendar of events to avoid scheduling conflicts.
- Support planning and execution of in-person and virtual events, including alumni panels, employer visits, career treks, and receptions.
- Collect and assess data on communications effectiveness through focus groups, analytics, and user feedback.
Operational & Technology Support
- Assist with CED's use of subscription-based platforms such as Handshake, PeopleGrove, and Interstride.
- Serve as CED co-representative on the Operations and Planning Advisory Group (OPAG), contributing to division-wide planning and operations.
Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and 3–5 years of professional experience, preferably in communications, project management, higher education, or related fields.
- Experience with email marketing, social media campaigns, and web content management.
- Experience using digital career platforms such as Handshake, PeopleGrove, Interstride, and LinkedIn.
- Prior experience in higher education, student affairs, or career development.
- Experience leading process audits or implementing new operational systems.
- Familiarity with project management or workflow tools (e.g., Asana, Airtable, Trello, or Smartsheet).
Compensation
Compensation for this position will be commensurate with the skill level, experience, and quality of the portfolio.
