About the Office of Institutional Compliance and Title IX
The Office of Institutional Compliance and Title IX (OIC) coordinates and supports compliance at Tennessee State University (TSU). The OIC ensures the University follows federal and state laws related to equal opportunity, harassment prevention, non-discrimination, retaliation, and Title IX. The OIC helps create a campus where all students, faculty, and staff can learn and work with dignity—free from discrimination and harassment by monitoring and enforcing these laws and university policies to ensure fair and equitable access to TSU's programs, services, and employment opportunities.
Job Overview
This position reports to and works closely with the OIC Executive Director/Title IX Coordinator to ensure prompt investigation of Title VI, Title VII, Title IX and other relevant complaints made to the OIC. The Compliance Investigator will be responsible for investigating and resolving complaints related to discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and misconduct based on protected characteristics as well as enforcing Title IX and non-discrimination policies. The Compliance Investigator is key to ensuring complaints are investigated in a timely and impartial manner, following all necessary procedures as outlined in law and policy, and in alignment with the University's mission and core values. The Compliance Investigator will provide training and resources on compliance topics including harassment prevention, sexual misconduct, and workplace fairness. The Compliance Investigator will also aid in the coordination of equal access to TSU programs and services while keeping the university informed about its obligations under federal and state civil rights laws and monitoring the university's compliance with equal opportunity and non-discrimination laws.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties and responsibilities of the Compliance Investigator include, but are not limited to:
- conducting fair, thorough, and impartial investigations of complaints related to sexual misconduct, discrimination, harassment, and retaliation involving students, staff, and faculty
- supporting the development and implementation of comprehensive educational and training initiatives
- working collaboratively across campus departments and helping to ensure that university policies and procedures promote a safe and supportive learning and working environment free from discrimination and harassment
- investigating allegations of discrimination and sexual misconduct independently or in collaboration with another investigator, including creating an investigation plan, conducting party and witness interviews, gathering and securing relevant documentation and other evidence, writing, and otherwise preparing investigation reports, and communicating with parties and witnesses throughout the investigation
- working closely with other University offices and community resources to assist in determining interim and supportive measures and implementing University policies
- preparing reports on investigative findings and maintaining an updated electronic database and case history files until the final resolution of complaint
- providing ongoing updates regarding the status of reports, complaints, and investigations to the OIC Executive Director/Title IX Coordinator
- supporting training for university students, faculty, and staff regarding prevention of and response to sexual misconduct, including the creation and dissemination of outreach materials, brochures, digital media, and training content
- assisting in preparing university responses to federal and state compliance agencies
- attending training seminars and conferences virtually or in-person, as requested, to keep abreast of current developments in federal and state law related to OIC's mandate
- contributing to the overall success of the University by performing other job-related duties as assigned by the Executive Director
The Compliance Investigator must be able to work independently on cases, while working collaboratively to help drive a culture of compliance at the University.
