Overview

This position has dual report to the Natural History Conservator at the Peabody Museum and to the Head of Anthropology Collections. The Conservation and Collections Technician will work independently to put their theoretical knowledge of collections management and conservation techniques into practice, and to undertake research related to aspects of the study and care of the collections. The Conservation technician will assess the condition of the holdings of the Yale Anthropology Collection and rehouse, when necessary, to preserve, protect, and guarantee the survival and future accessibility of these objects. The person in this position will maintain written and digital records of the objects in the collection management system and assist with the day-to-day conservation needs of the Anthropology Collection. Work with researchers as well as students to foster knowledge and promote a greater understanding of anthropology objects.

Plan and undertake condition assessments, including examination, analysis, and condition reporting of objects. Maintain written and digital records of the objects in the collection management system. Assist with the day-to-day conservation needs of the Anthropology Collection, requesting supplies and equipment. Participate in researching and testing new materials. Mentor and engage with graduate and undergraduate students at Yale. Work with students and researchers to foster knowledge and promote a greater understanding of anthropology objects. Ensure the safety of objects during conservation treatments and handling. Assist in ensuring that the proper storage and care of collections is maintained by students, researchers and curatorial staff.

Participates in the design and performance of research projects relating to the analysis or degradation of materials used in fabricating or stabilizing cultural property and natural history collection objects. Prepares written reports of research findings and status, and prepare and present lectures describing research findings at professional conferences and other venues. Performs examinations or analytical tests on Yale collection objects upon request, and assists in the preparation of reports describing those findings.

Provides support to other scientists at the Art Conservation Research Center and Center for Conservation and Preservation, and participates in shared duties, such as managing instrument maintenance and compliance with safety protocols. May provide support for occasional student researchers. Participates in occasional teaching and guest tours. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of the principals of collections management, cultural materials, and preventive conservation, including documentation practices.
  2. Knowledge of a wide range of approaches to conservation treatments. Strong organizational, analytical and training skills.
  3. Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with a large group of colleagues.
  4. Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  5. Demonstrated ability to perform independent research and conservation techniques.

Preferred Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Art and/or Museum Conservation, Materials Science, or related field and 5 years’ experience in collection management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

Proven hand skills. Manual dexterity. Visual acuity.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry or related field and two years of laboratory research experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
