Consortium Manager

Consortium Manager

The Milner Therapeutics Institute is a purpose-built research institute at the University of Cambridge, with an overarching vision to convert pioneering science into therapies by driving academic-industry partnerships. The MTI is breaking new ground in cross-sector collaborations and demonstrates a world-leading model of start-up companies, academics and pharma working side by side at the bench. The MTI environment offers a unique opportunity to work at the interface of academia and industry, catalysing partnerships that will drive drug discovery.

The Institute is also the global headquarters for the Milner Therapeutics Consortium and Affiliate Company network, which consists of 90 organisations and connects academia and industry to enable collaborative research and drive drug discovery partnerships. Our events programme to facilitate interactions across this network includes an annual Symposium that has grown to over 800 attendees, monthly seminars and bespoke workshops.

The Milner Consortium Manager is a critical position focused on developing the overall strategy and profile of the Milner Therapeutics Consortium, thereby contributing to the overall success and vision of the Milner Therapeutics Institute. The role holder will report to the Head of Partnerships and Alliance and will be responsible for driving new research collaborations of the 10 Consortium companies with the academic community at the University, Babraham Institute and Wellcome Sanger Institute. They will work in the Partnerships team to deliver an annual call for Consortium research proposals, and administer and manage projects arising from this call. This will include developing and running the process for project calls under the Consortium, project set-up, liaison with the Research Operations Office to put contracts in place and supporting researchers throughout this process.

They will work closely with the Milner team and Innovation Board to lead a strategy for prioritising research topics in proposal calls and identify opportunities for aligning these with research strengths of the local academic community. The role holder will advise Consortium companies throughout the year in identifying researchers working in areas of interest, to mediate introductions and gauge opportunities for potential research collaborations. They will take a proactive approach in facilitating introductions, delivering challenge workshops and applying a broad expertise in biomedical research to lead the discussion effectively between parties to initiate new collaborative projects. They will also support interaction of the Consortium partners with start-ups in the Cambridge landscape, through joint initiatives and pitch events with the Milner Enterprise team and affiliated partners.

Applicants should possess a PhD in biomedical sciences and experience of postdoctoral research at the level of Research Associate, or extensive equivalent experience. They will possess experience in cross-sector partnerships, scientific project management, budgetary management and experience convening and organising meetings. Knowledge of how scientific projects work, especially in the area of translational work, is highly beneficial. The ideal role holder will possess sufficient breadth/depth of specialist knowledge in biomedical research to help develop research objectives, projects and proposals. They should have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and be confident in dealing with individuals at all levels of seniority.

This is a 0.6 Part-Time FTE position, 22.2 hours per week. The working pattern for this can discussed upon appointment.
