Overview

Reporting to one of the Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) Senior Contract Managers, the Contract Manager (CM) provides support to faculty and administrators to facilitate research at Yale that involves contractual relationships with third parties. The CM will assist in the review and development of proposals for sponsored research, as well as the negotiation, execution and administration of contracts, including research agreements, federal contracts, confidentiality agreements, data use agreements and material transfer agreements. The CM has an assigned portfolio of departments and/or agreement types and is responsible for the negotiation and/or acceptance of contracts on behalf of Yale University, ensures that the terms and conditions of awards comply with Yale policies, and that the contract is properly administered during its life. The CM will provide faculty and administrators guidance regarding interpretation of contract terms and conditions, will keep abreast of changes in University policy, federal regulations, sponsor requirements, and will be a valuable resource to the Yale community in advancing its mission while adhering to its policies and procedures. This position may be eligible to work largely remotely.

Required Skills and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of contracts/legal issues. Understanding contract principles, terms and conditions as well as business principles. Ability to negotiate contract terms and conditions related to intellectual property, indemnification, publications, confidentiality, among others.
  2. Excellent communication skills both written and verbal, with demonstrated organizational skills.
  3. Demonstrated superior and organized customer service coordination working with multiple stakeholders, i.e., faculty, sponsors, administrators, etc.
  4. Ability to analyze and solve problems. Thorough working knowledge of PC-based tools including Microsoft Office Suite, database administration and other related software.
  5. Ability to work well as part of a team and support others on the team during high pressure deadlines. The ability to work under pressure and not sacrifice accuracy and customer service.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills

Juris Doctor degree preferred, Master’s degree in a related field, working knowledge of federal regulations as they relate to the conduct of research. Working knowledge of contract management in an institution of higher education, health care system, medical center, or private organization conducting research.

This position is primarily remote, with occasional on-site requirements a few times per year.

Principal Responsibilities

  1. Review, develop, and negotiate agreements and contracts with industry, not-for-profit and other agencies.
  2. Maintain knowledge of and interpret applicable policies, statutes, regulations and procedures formulated by the federal government as well as other sponsors in the review and negotiation of contracts.
  3. Act as a resource for other OSP staff in the review and negotiation of agreements and contracts, including guidance on contract terms and conditions such as indemnification, limitation of liability, intellectual property, royalty sharing, and confidentiality.
  4. Collaborate and consult with other University offices such as Human Research Protection Program (HRPP), Office of Cooperative Research (OCR), Office of General Counsel (OGC), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and the Office of Research Administration in the review and negotiation of agreements and contracts ensuring that all offices are apprised of the status of negotiations and any other relevant communications.
  5. Foster relationships and partnerships with sponsors, various Yale schools and departments, and faculty.
  6. Advise, assist in, and provide training on policies and issues related to research administration and the various aspects of contract preparation and submittal for faculty and staff, both internal and external.
  7. Assist OSP in the effective facilitation of information to the broader Yale Research Community.
  8. Perform additional functions, special projects, and other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree and four years of related experience in academic, business or industry; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
