Job Description Summary

In compliance with Article 9 of the agreement between the PFT and the District, probationary and tenured faculty are invited to apply to the following full-time, tenure-track faculty vacancy.
INTERNAL TRANSFER REVIEW END DATE : MAY 26, 2026.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Provides academic, vocational, personal, and disability adjustment counseling to persons eligible for services from the Disabled Students Programs & Services ( DSPS )
• Prescribes services based on educational limitations resulting from disability for all eligible students.
• Develops and monitors Student Education Plans
• Assists instructors and students in making appropriate modifications for classroom accommodations.
• Maintains individual disability student files with all mandated forms according to Federal and State laws and regulations.
• Maintains appropriate records as required by funding sources.
• Conducts scheduled individual counseling sessions.
• Conducts group counseling sessions as assigned.
• May conduct on-campus and off-campus counseling assignments.
• Assist with orientation and other events for students with disabilities.
• Teach counseling and guidance courses as assigned in accordance with established course outlines and expectations.
• Keep current with trends and developments in the field through literature, conferences, and other information sources.
• Assist with students with disabilities in utilizing community resources.
• Assist students in clarifying their educational goals, developing student education plans (SEPs), selecting courses, and determining appropriate accommodations.
• Provide follow-up services to students with disabilities, including those on probation or dismissal status.
• Provides general counseling which includes providing students with information and advice regarding educational programs, occupational programs and degree and transfer requirements.
• Assists students in the selection of majors, careers, and the development of student educational plans.
• Assists students with the decision-making process and exploration of alternatives in regards to college adjustment, personal growth and development, social adjustments and goals.
• Participates in the College-wide Matriculation Program.
• Administers vocational/career assessment instruments and interprets findings with students.
• Teaches classes in career and life planning, study skills, human development and/or counseling and facilitates small group discussions.
• Represents the Counseling Department on college and district committees.
• Participates in outreach and training activities with high schools, four-year institutions and/or community agencies.
• Provides professional service that includes counseling, advising, evaluation of transcripts, attendance at meetings and participation in the governance structure of the college and the district.
• Responsible for continuously updating professional competency through post-graduate and/or in-service training.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by the college.

The Counselor is also responsible for providing a full professional service week that may include, but is not limited to:

• Maintenance of office hours;
• Performing departmental duties such as program and curriculum development, evaluation and revision, and selecting appropriate program materials, and working with administrators and other faculty to develop a comprehensive pre-collegiate program;
• Participation in professional activities such as departmental and campus committee work, faculty peer evaluations, staff meetings and participation in the governance structure of the College and District;
• Pursuing professional growth activities to remain current;
• Performing professional outreach activities (e.g., working with administrators and other faculty, as part of course development and depending on need, by participating in an industry advisory committee for a program, working with inter-segmental education partners—such as high school, adult school and other colleges—and industry partners to design and implement effective basic skills curricula and career pathways in the discipline, etc.); and
• Performing other related duties as assigned by the College.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Possession of a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in rehabilitation counseling;
2. Possession of a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in special education, AND twenty-four (24) or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, or social work ;
3. Possession of a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, career development, or social welfare; and either twelve (12) or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically in counseling or rehabilitation of individual with disabilities, OR two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following;
   A. Counseling or guidance for students with disabilities; OR
   B. Counseling and/or guidance in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities.
4. May submit a fully satisfied lifetime California Community College Disabled Student Programs and Services Instructor Credential authorizing service to teach courses in college courses for students with disabilities.
5. The equivalent qualifications. (Candidates who claim equivalency must provide conclusive evidence, as clear and reliable on the college transcripts as required on the District Equivalency Application Form. Refer to the Equivalency Procedures below. This is not a process to waive the minimum qualifications.) Note: Foreign Degree(s) must be evaluated by an official foreign credentials/transcripts evaluation and translation service.
6. Applicant must have demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college staff, faculty, and students

Other Requirements

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications as established by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. Applicants are required to demonstrate that they meet the minimum qualifications by submitting official or unofficial transcripts and providing a complete and detailed record of relevant professional work experience in their application materials. The District will review education and work history to determine whether minimum qualifications are met. Determinations are made in accordance with Title 5 regulations and District procedures. Official transcripts and additional verification of employment will be required upon offer of employment.

If experience is required in lieu of a master’s degree: For disciplines requiring a degree and professional experience, applicants must clearly describe how their education and work experience meet the stated minimum qualifications.

Equivalency

Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications exactly may apply for equivalency. Equivalency determinations are made through a separate review process in accordance with District procedures.

The Equivalency Committee will consider only those applicants who formally request equivalency consideration by submitting the Completed Equivalency Request Form with their application. Be sure to attach detailed evidence, such as unofficial transcripts and/or other certifications that support the equivalency.

Transcripts or translations in English still require the evaluation to show the U.S. equivalence of your degree.

Desirable Qualifications

1. At least one year of community college experience within the last five (5) years with a diverse multi-ethnic student population.
2. Working knowledge of the Title 5 and other governmental regulations as they apply to students with disabilities;
3. Experience designing and preparing Student Educational Plans (SEPs) for community college students;
4. Ability to develop and maintain student counseling notes in SARS, or similar electronic record keeping software, in a timely and effective manner;
5. Knowledge of and experience using university articulation agreements and transfer requirements for counseling community college students;
6. Ability to use computer databases to retrieve student, college, and career information, as well as knowledge of essential computer applications;
7. Knowledge and experience making appropriate college and community referrals;
8. Awareness of assistive technology and alternate media services for students with disabilities.
9. Knowledge of adapted materials designed to facilitate success among students with disabilities.
10. Ability to work with students with a variety of disabilities.
11. Possession of a California license as a Marriage and Family Therapist ( MFT ), Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor ( LPCC ), or Psychologist (Psy.D)
