Counselor
Counseling Services at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications to fill a full-time 10-month Counselor position.
SUNY Oswego Counseling Services (CS) offers multi-disciplinary, comprehensive, and diverse services to students that enable them to be more successful in their academic, personal, and career pursuits. CS is IACS accredited and hosts masters-level graduate trainees and counselor education doctoral-level trainees for clinical internships from accredited education programs.
CS's efforts focus on helping students reduce psychological symptoms, cope with life events and developmental tasks, improve interpersonal skills and relationships, and increase self-knowledge and problem-solving ability. CS promotes equity and respect for individual and cultural differences and offers consulting services to the entire University community. CS is part of the Division of Student Affairs, which contributes to and facilitates critical learning and development within healthy, inclusive, and supportive communities.
Reporting to an Assistant Director of Counseling Services, the Counselor contributes to the center's goal of making mental health services accessible for all students and is responsible for: conducting individual counseling for students, offering programming for students to aid in their adjustment to the college and life skills development, providing crisis intervention to the college community and referrals when necessary, serving as a mental health consultant to other college services units, and in general, being a cooperative and supportive staff member.

Description of Responsibilities:
- Provide clinical services, including intake assessments; individual and group counseling/therapy through both in-person and tele-mental health services; crisis intervention; case management; consultation with staff, faculty, families, and students.
- Participate in and support department outreach initiatives for the university community to promote wellbeing including interpersonal and academic skills.
- Provide assistance to special programs or to particular student groups as identified by the leadership of the department.
- Provides faculty and staff consultation and resources in their work with students and encourages their participation in providing students both individual and group assistance;
- As clinical load permits, attend meetings, workshops and training programs that will benefit the university, the Division, the department and/or will promote the professional development of the counselor.
- Participate in the routine office/administrative operations of Counseling Services including maintaining up to date treatment plans, clinical records; carrying out pertinent correspondence; and developing and maintaining a cooperative working relationship with department colleagues and other university and community groups.
- Provide other clinical/counseling related services and activities as assigned.
- Serve on university, division, and department committees as requested.

Required Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in a mental health related field required.
- Licensed or license eligible as a mental health provider in New York State. New graduates and out-of-state applicants must hold a provisional license within 3 months of start date, and a full NY State license within 3 years of start date.
- Commitment to providing culturally responsive counseling to marginalized and underserved campus communities.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and cooperatively with a team of professionals.
- Ability to maintain up-to-date and accurate documentation.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse university community of students, faculty, administrators and families.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2 years of clinical experience.
- Experience with providing counseling and therapy in a university/college mental health setting.
- Experience in providing group services in a clinical setting.
- Excellent communication, decision-making skills and the ability to work autonomously within a team atmosphere.
- Strong written and verbal communication, organizational skills and an ability to provide outreach and training to groups of people.
- Experience providing risk assessments and crisis intervention.
