M2 / ING3 INTERNSHIP OFFER (6 MONTHS)
Project title: Multi-scale modelling of carbazole-based hybrid vitrimer matrices for self-healing photovoltaics
Laboratory: Laboratory of Physicochemistry of Polymers and Interfaces (LPPI). https://lppi.cyu.fr/
Institution: CY Cergy Paris Université, Neuville-sur-Oise Campus (95)
Duration: 6 months (statutory internship allowance)
Proposed period: February – July 2027
Supervisor: Llinersy URANGA PINA (CPJ) (LPPI Modelling Research Team).
CONTEXT AND PROJECT SUMMARY
Halogenated perovskite photovoltaic cells are experiencing exceptional growth due to their high conversion efficiencies. However, their sensitivity to thermomechanical stresses and the formation of defects at the perovskite/hole transport layer (HTL) interfaces remain a major obstacle to their industrialisation.
To overcome these barriers, this project proposes to incorporate self-healing vitrimer networks of the vinylogue urethane (VUV) type, functionalised with carbazole motifs (hole transport properties). The aim of the internship is to study the isolated (bulk) hybrid material theoretically, at the molecular and mesoscopic levels, in order to evaluate its optoelectronic and thermomechanical performance prior to its integration at the perovskite interface.
THE INTERNSHIP HOLDER’S RESPONSIBILITIES
Working in direct collaboration with the project’s PhD student, the intern will be responsible for:
- Quantum chemistry (DFT / TD-DFT): Conformational studies and geometric optimisation of carbazole-VUV monomers. Calculation of boundary orbitals (HOMO/LUMO), energy gaps and hole reorganisation energies using Marcus theory.
- Force field parameterisation & Molecular dynamics (MD) modelling: Adjustment of missing dihedral parameters for the GAFF2/OPLS-AA force field. Construction of amorphous boxes (PACKMOL) representing different Carbazole-HTM/Linker-VUV stoichiometric ratios (e.g. 100:0, 80:20, 50:50).
- Conventional thermomechanical characterisation (LAMMPS): Carrying out thermal annealing cycles (NPT, from 500 K to 300 K). Extraction of lattice density, glass transition temperature and mechanical moduli, and analysis of the hydrogen bonding network.
DESIRED PROFILE
Education: Master’s 2 student (or 3rd-year engineering student) in computational chemistry, materials physics, physical chemistry or polymer science.
Technical skills:
- Proficiency in the concepts of quantum chemistry (DFT) and/or molecular dynamics. Practical experience with specialised software (e.g. Gaussian, ORCA, LAMMPS, PACKMOL, VMD/Avogadro). Good understanding of programming/scripting (Python, Bash) in a Linux environment.
