About the opportunity
The Sydney Pharmacy School is a globally recognised leading centre for pharmacy education, with over 100 years of excellence in education. Our teams of researchers lead key internationally competitive research from molecules to medicines, from patient to policy, across a range of therapeutic areas.
This role is funded through an NHMRC Partnership Project grant to establish the Health Innovation Observatory–Australia (HIO‑A)—a national horizon‑scanning function that identifies the benefits, risks and operational implications of emerging health technologies to support proactive, system‑wide decision‑making.
As our Data Engineer, you will help design, maintain and optimise an AWS‑based data platform, developed by our UK partner, the NIHR Innovation Observatory, and extended for Australian needs with tailored data models and dashboards. Working in a multidisciplinary team, you’ll contribute to data modelling, API integrations and infrastructure maintenance, building pipelines that draw from sources such as clinical trial registries, regulatory approvals and scientific literature to deliver timely, trusted insights. You’ll also support business and compliance processes by embedding strong data governance and security practices (privacy, auditability and OWASP‑aligned controls), ensuring the platform is reliable, secure and ready to scale.
We are seeking a motivated and detail‑oriented Data Engineer to contribute to this nationally significant work.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- Provide technical support and guidance on core Data Engineering principles
- Assist in interpreting business requirements and translating them into effective data solutions
- Support the upkeep of software tools and troubleshoot software‑related issues
- Contribute to the development of basic API integrations under supervision
- Participate in simple data modelling tasks, ensuring data reliability and consistency
- Maintain technical documentation and support early‑stage testing processes
- Take the lead in stakeholder communications, ensuring trust, clarity, and timely responses
- Support timely reporting, maintain data integrity, and work with managers to advance compliance initiatives
- Coordinate purchasing processes and resolve discrepancies in payment schedules
- Champion a proactive approach to health and safety, contribute feedback on protocols, and collaborate across teams to ensure consistent safety standards
About you
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience
- Strong SQL and Python skills for data engineering and analysis and understanding of reporting systems
- Experience with NoSQL, structured querying languages, and programming
- Experience integrating external data sources/APIs
- Experience building and optimising data platforms on AWS
- Ability to design and develop clear data visualisations
- Experience across end‑to‑end Business Intelligence/Data Warehouse implementation
- Understanding of Extract-Transform-Load development practices
- Experience working within agile frameworks and version control
- Awareness of data governance, privacy and security
- Exposure to research environments
