Position Summary
The Dean of Arts and Sciences plays a pivotal role in steering the instructional programs within the Arts and Sciences Division, ensuring they are both innovative and impactful. With a strategic vision, the Dean significantly enhances the institution's overall effectiveness by advocating for the division's needs on various standing and ad-hoc college committees, thereby shaping the academic landscape and fostering a collaborative environment.
Kellogg Community College is located in Battle Creek, Michigan, a community of approximately 54,000 people. Leisure activities, natural resources and learning opportunities provide a foundation for residents. Located along the I-94 interstate, Battle Creek is within 30 minutes of Kalamazoo, 60 minutes of Lansing and Grand Rapids and within three hours of Detroit, Chicago and Indianapolis.

Physical Demands
The job responsibilities are performed in an office area and presentation venues. Travel by car required. The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as independent mobility between work areas, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward (8 - 45 pounds). Typically requires regular use of one or more physical senses of medium intensity and long duration. Must meet reasonable deadlines, quotas or demands for accuracy, and may be involved in some mildly unpleasant situations.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Master's degree (MA, MS, MBA) in Educational Leadership or discipline specific to the Arts and Sciences offered at KCC, from an accredited college or university. (At time of application, please upload unofficial transcripts showing degree and date of conferral.)
  2. Knowledge and experience with Higher Learning Commission accreditation, General Education, Assessment, and faculty qualifications.
  3. Demonstrated leadership in developing curriculum and program review, advocacy for transfer education, creating transfer pathways and agreements.
  4. Demonstrated successful experience in collaborative and inclusive support of community engagement.
  5. Five or more (5+) years of academic administrative experience.
  6. Three or more (3+) years of post-secondary teaching experience.
  7. Must be able to meet minimum requirements outlined by the appropriate State of Michigan Department.

Preferred but not Required

  1. Earned Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Leadership experience with educational reform (e.g., Guided Pathways) or change management.
  3. Experience with third-party accreditation.

Proposed Salary
According to the Kellogg Community College Hay Administrative Compensation program, the 2025-2026 annual salary range for a Dean 1 position, $102,301 to $127,875 to start. The 2026-2027 annual salary range for a Dean 1 position will be $105,370 to $131,711, effective July 1, 2026.

Job Duties

Essential Function: Academic Leadership

  • Plan curriculum, General Education design and assessment.
  • Budget, resource prioritization and allocation.
  • Supervise direct reports.
  • Program planning, development, assessment, and marketing.
  • Provide leadership for transfer and articulation.
  • Collaborate with all faculty, administrative reports, advisory committees, and all other internal stakeholders and processes throughout the institution.

Essential Function: Conflict Resolution

  • Effectively resolve personnel-related issues, including resolving conflicts that arise between students, faculty, administration and staff.
  • Effectively build and develop relationships.
  • Resolve student issues including grade and refund appeals, problems with faculty and/or staff, complaints about programs, facilities, or processes like admission requirements.
  • Understand and work within the confines of collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) to support staff and faculty and resolve conflicts.

Essential Function: Fiscal Leadership

  • Responsible for budgeting and resource allocation, including approval of purchase requisitions over $250, administrative travel and professional development requests, capital equipment and facility improvement requests, and budget adjustment proposals.
  • Oversight of division processes such as scheduling, faculty loading, deciding which classes will run, catalog changes, and institutional reporting.

Essential Function: Systems Leadership

  • Participate on committees, i.e., academic cabinet, online curriculum development, placement, assessment, grade and refund appeals, enrollment management and various ad-hoc committees.
  • Chair the General Education Committee.
