Dean of Academic Affairs

Air University's Air Command and Staff College (ACSC) invites applications from qualified individuals for Dean of Academic Affairs. Candidates will serve as the primary advisor to the Commandant, staff and faculty, ACSC on all aspects of intermediate level professional education. Provides effective leadership of ACSC educational programs and provides academic expertise in the design, development, and execution of educational programs to achieve Joint Staff and regional accreditation standards.

The Air Command and Staff College provides a dynamic and evolving academic environment for teaching and research. Students in residence at ACSC are mid-career military officers and civil servants preparing to assume increased operational and strategic responsibilities across the world. Duties consist of a wide range of leadership, management, supervisory, planning and program coordination. ACSC prepares field grade officers to develop, employ and command airpower in joint, multinational and interagency operations; and maintains overall accountability for curriculum development and execution, faculty management, and mission achievement in the ACSC educational programs.

The Dean of Academic Affairs Supervises, advises and provides counsel to employees regarding policies, procedures, and directives of management. Selects or recommends selection of candidates for vacancies, promotions, details, and reassignments in consideration of skills and qualifications, mission requirements, and overall merit. Develops, modifies, and/or interprets performance standards. Explains performance expectations to employees and provides regular feedback on strengths and weaknesses. Holds employees responsible for satisfactory completion of work assignments. Appraises subordinate workers performance ensuring consistency and equity in rating techniques. Recommends solutions to address complaints and refers serious unresolved complaints to higher level management. Initiates action to correct performance or conduct problems. Effects minor disciplinary measures such as warnings and reprimands and recommends action in more serious disciplinary matters. Prepares documentation to support actions taken. Identifies employee developmental needs and provides or arranges for training (formal and on-the-job) to maintain and improve job performance. Encourages self-development. Approves master leave schedule assuring adequate coverage during peak workloads and traditional holiday vacation time. Demonstrates sensitivity to ideas of subordinates. Promotes an environment in which employees are empowered to participate and contribute to effective mission accomplishment. Discharges security responsibilities by ensuring education and compliance with security directives for employees with access to classified or sensitive material. Recognizes and takes action to correct situations posing a threat to the health and safety of subordinates.

The Dean of Academic Affairs Interprets and executes guidance from higher headquarters, Joint Staff, and the Commandant in shaping the curriculum. Approves all core and elective courses as well as special program elements of the curriculum. Ensures appropriate level of curriculum integration, development of evaluation instruments, and the development of appropriate learning methodologies. Oversees all faculty recruiting, hiring, development, evaluation and management. Represents ACSC at the Military Education Coordination Committee (MECC) Working Group and other Joint, Air Force, and AU level forums. Guides and sets priorities for department chairs and subordinate deans. Prioritizes the use of personnel, time and resources in responding to external taskings.

The Dean of Academic Affairs is expected to teach, lecture, and facilitate research and promote curriculum innovation. They will supervise and advise student research in course work, research projects and Professional Studies Papers. Provides detailed feedback and other guidance to students and documentation of student progress in core and elective courses. Engages in professional outreach in areas of expertise related to ACSC curriculum. Actively supports faculty publication of scholarly works such as articles, monographs, and book reviews in peer-reviewed scholarly journals, professional journals and other outlets. Delivers lectures, conduct seminars, participate in panel discussions related to ACSC curriculum and in area of expertise at various institutions such as other professional military education schools, civilian institutions, and other learned societies. Maintains academic currency by consistently reviewing professional literature and participating in professional associations, as well as, consistently ensuring academic support to all AU organizations for relevant conferences and other events sponsored by these organizations. Promotes dissemination of curriculum innovations through participation in professional organizational activities and collaboration with other professional military education schools.
