Description

SOLANO COMMUNITY COLLEGE has an opening for a full-time Dean, School of Mathematics and Sciences. The Successful candidate will plan, organize, administer, develop and evaluate the programs and activities of Astronomy, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Horticulture, Mathematics, Physical Science, Physics, and Water/Wastewater instructional programs.
Educational Administrators in this classification provide first-line leadership and supervise personnel assigned to specific College academic schools. Incumbents supervise both full-time and part-time faculty, classified personnel, operating engineering personnel, student workers, and auxiliary employees. Incumbents are responsible for planning, developing and overseeing the daily operations within a school of the college-wide academic program The dean provides for the educational welfare of students and the professional needs of faculty and staff in their disciplines.
The School of Math and Science prepares students for certificates and degrees in math and sciences, provides general education courses for students in other programs and majors, and prepares students to transfer to four-year colleges and universities. The School houses a four-year baccalaureate degree in Biomanufacturing to begin in the 2017-18 academic year. New facilities for the School are currently under construction on the Fairfield campus and at the Vacaville Center. Currently, 40 full-time instructors and more than 120 part-time instructors are employed in the School, teaching math and science courses at the main campus in Fairfield, Centers in Vacaville and Vallejo, and additional sites in the area.
Full Salary Range $124,816.16 - $177,652.32

Responsibilities

Program Development

  1. Provide effective leadership for program development. Work with faculty and staff to determine needs for curriculum or program additions, modifications, and deletions; set priorities for resource needs; produce program analysis and long-range plans; three-year plans; participate in the integrated planning process of the District.
  2. Prepare documents for program and course development; produce accurate schedules, catalog information and program publicity. Prepare reports on program review, SLOs, PLOs, ILOs, accreditation, and grant applications.
  3. Maintain current knowledge of new developments and innovations in community colleges and higher education in areas of specialty.
  4. Work cooperatively with Student Services personnel to develop appropriate and effective assessment and testing methods and practices relevant to School course/program offerings.
  5. Work effectively with Student Services personnel on student outreach and retention efforts.

Schedule and Budget Management

  1. Consult collegially with faculty and staff regarding appropriate schedule of classes to meet the needs of students; assign faculty to teach classes; monitor schedules and workload for accuracy throughout the semester according to provisions of the collective bargaining agreement; assure accurate and timely attendance reporting for all courses offered and assign substitutes.
  2. Exercise leadership in the development and management of the School budget; administer financial resources consistent with District policy and sound financial management principles.
  3. Evaluate, approve, and process School requests for supplies and equipment.

Management

  1. Communicate effectively and openly with faculty and staff by holding regular meetings and in-service training to facilitate integrated planning and decision-making and to keep faculty and staff informed about issues and projects for the overall College program.
  2. Encourage excellence in teaching; orient new faculty and staff; work with faculty and staff to determine needs for staff and faculty development; plan appropriate staff and faculty development activities including flexible calendar days; contribute to record keeping for staff and faculty development accountability.
  3. In conjunction with staff, analyze staffing needs and make recommendations to the Vice President of Academic Affairs; and assist in development of job descriptions for new positions.
  4. Assist in development of targeted recruitment for job positions. Organize and serve on committees for hiring and assure compliance with District personnel policies, procedures and practices for the employment of faculty, administrators, classified staff, student workers and short-term, temporary and substitute employees.
  5. Mediate and resolve faculty, staff and student problems, complaints and first level grievances according to employee contracts and college policy and procedures.
  6. Supervise and evaluate faculty, classified staff, student workers, and auxiliary personnel, such as Coordinators, according to proper management practices, the District policies, procedures, collective bargaining contracts and state and federal regulations. Implement content of collective bargaining agreements.

Administration-Outreach

  1. Communicate with leaders in the private and public sectors and in educational agencies to determine needs for new courses or support programs; serve as resources to the community.
  2. Respond to requests for services from the community; organize appropriate responses.
  3. Facilitate academic partnerships between the College and local high schools such as Tech Prep and Middle/Early College High School; College programs and between SCC faculty, faculty in feeder high schools and four-year transfer institutions.
  4. Work closely with the articulation officer of the College to assure maximum course articulation.
  5. Work with Workforce and Economic Development to respond to requests for instruction from the community; organize appropriate classes, determine on which basis courses can be offered, and when appropriate, develop contracts for instruction, following through with budget and contract monitoring.
  6. Establish functioning advisory committees as appropriate. Work with the Dean of the School of Career Technical Education and Business to plan and coordinate vocational programs for the School of Mathematics and Science to meet community needs in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
  7. Work with deans of other campus schools to create interdisciplinary offerings where appropriate, and upper-division baccalaureate courses where appropriate.

Administration

  1. Direct and participate in the preparation and maintenance of records and reports related to personnel, workload, payroll, schedule, enrollment, program review and budget. Administer attendance accounting requirements and responsibilities.
  2. Administer procedures for academic and student services such as special admission requests, credit by examination, time conflicts, independent study requests and other student related forms, Academic Council petitions, grade changes, incomplete and grade contracts.
  3. Assist in implementation of staff and student equity goals for the District.
  4. Provide support and leadership for District Strategic Goals and Objectives, Student Learning Outcomes, Program Learning Outcomes and Institutional Learning Outcomes.
  5. Serve as the evening administrator as assigned.
  6. Work cooperatively with other administrators and supervisors to coordinate programs and services across the College and at all locations to meet student needs.
  7. Assure proper use and security of assigned facilities and equipment maintenance; make arrangements for equipment maintenance; compliance with health and safety regulations; develop remodeling requests; provide for the monitoring of safety and hazardous materials requirements.
  8. Serve on College and ad hoc committees; attend meetings and conferences; make oral presentations and written reports to College and community groups as requested.
  9. Collaborate in the design and implementation of the Educational Master Plan, the Facilities Master Plan, the Technology Plan, and other guiding documents as needed.
  10. Coordinate and participate in campus-wide activities; guest lectures; high school visitations; and other student activities.
  11. Assure that programs operate within state and federally mandated requirements.
  12. Recruit and develop adjunct hiring pools.
  13. Promote excellence in teaching.
  14. Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination equivalent to a Master's Degree from an accredited institution of higher education in AND
One (1) year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator's administrative assignment.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Four years of full-time postsecondary teaching experience and/or tenure, preferably in a discipline related to the assigned area.
  • Knowledge of baccalaureate program development and implementation in the California Community College system.
  • Experience with planning processes in new facilities construction.
  • Experience planning and implementing current statewide initiatives in the California Community College system.
  • Experience planning courses and managing facilities and staffing at Centers and multiple campus sites.

  • Work collaboratively with faculty to develop an effective Schedule of Classes to produce a high quality program.
  • Work within Governing Board/District approved guidelines to establish positive media and community relations.
  • Demonstrate commitment to student success, retention and completion in program courses of study.
