Dental Hygienist - Part-Time (NY HELPS)
Required Qualifications:
As per civil service standards and specifications. Must have taken and passed the specific job related Civil Service Exam and be reachable on the appropriate Civil Service list. 70.1 Transfers are encouraged to apply. 70.1 Transfer Candidates must have been appointed from a Civil Service List and have served permanently in an appropriate title(s) for one year. Transfers must be within two salary grades. The Civil Service list for this position might provide insufficient acceptors, therefore, a non competitive New York Hiring for Emergency Placement Statewide (NY HELPS) appointment may be made. To be considered for a non competitive NY HELPS appointment, candidate must be in possession of a license and current registration to practice Dental Hygiene in New York State.

Brief Description of Duties:
Dental Hygienists are licensed to practice dental hygiene in New York State and perform a wide variety of dental services in accordance with Article 133 of the Education Law. Positions assist dentists in their practice by performing preventive and therapeutic treatment procedures and by instructing individuals* in oral selfcare techniques. *Individual refers to a person who is being treated or cared for, and is used in place of patient, client, or other nomenclature specific to an agency. Dental Hygienist: works under the supervision of a licensed dentist; performs duties in the areas of preventive and therapeutic treatment and the instruction of individuals in oral self-care techniques, which have been identified by the New York State Education Department as functions requiring licensure, for at least seventy percent of their working time.
This position is assigned to work at The Long Island State Veterans Home, located on the campus of Stony Brook University. The Long Island State Veterans Home is a 350-bed skilled nursing facility with a 40-slot Adult Day Health Care Program dedicated to the care of honorably discharged Veterans of the United States Armed Forces, their spouses and Gold Star parents. Clinical
- Performs dental services under the supervision of a licensed dentist.
- Places and exposes diagnostic dental X-ray films.
- Removes deposits, growths, and stains from the exposed surfaces of the teeth and applies topical agents for dental treatment.
- Removes cement, places or removes rubber dam, removes sutures, and places matrix band.
- Performs topical medication, fluoride, and anesthetic applications.
- Polishes teeth, including existing restorations.
- Takes impressions for study casts.
- Places and removes temporary restorations.
- May perform all services properly performed by a Dental Assistant.
Administrative
- Takes medical history and charts dental caries.
- Teaches proper hygiene techniques for teeth and gums and develops individual at-home oral hygiene programs.
Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:
This is a part-time position, 30 hours per week, Monday through Friday, days varied, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference. SG 12 Hiring Rate $40,340 at .80 fte. and Geographic Pay of $10,400.
