Grade 7: £39,424 - £47,779 per annum, inclusive of Oxford University Weighting

The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies aims to appoint a Departmental Lecturer (DL) in Egyptology, for two years to cover the teaching and certain other duties of two permanent post-holders during consecutive periods of sabbatical leave from September 2026.

This position is a great opportunity for a highly promising scholar to develop their career through research, teaching and collaborative work in Egyptology at Oxford. The successful candidate will play an active and valued role in teaching the Faculty’s undergraduate and graduate courses in the area, particularly in the teaching of Middle to Late Egyptian texts, object handling classes in the Ashmolean Museum, and wide-ranging social and cultural topics.

You will have completed, or be very close to completing, a doctorate in Egyptology, and possess a solid breadth and depth of knowledge of the major phases of Egyptian language. Your knowledge of Middle and Late Egyptian texts, the hieratic script, and material culture will be sufficient to teach, develop course materials and undertake relevant research. You must have a willingness to undertake administrative tasks, and a commitment to communicating and publishing research in your field of study. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills are also essential.

This position is based in central Oxford. This is a full-time, fixed-term position until 30 August 2028.
