Deputy Dean
UWE College of Hainan Medical University is a fully recognized Joint Institute recognized by the Ministry of Education and UWE Bristol. Delivering academic disciplines related to Health, the College will grow to 1600 students studying in purpose-built accommodation. The aim is to promote academic excellence through teaching and learning, research and enterprise alongside providing an outstanding student experience.
The Deputy Dean is a key leadership and management role, shaping strategy for the new school and ensuring its success in terms of academic performance and ensuring an outstanding learning experience for students. The role holder will be expected to provide effective and values led leadership and to work across all stakeholders within the Joint Institute framework to ensure strategic and organisational alignment.
Working closely with the Dean appointed by Hainan Medical University, the role holder will be accountable for ensuring excellence in all academic and research portfolios delivered by UWE Bristol across the Joint Institute and for enhancing the student and staff experience.
The role holder will have an oversight and be a member of the UWE College of Hainan University Joint Executive Committee, Research Committee, Academic Standards Committee, Finance Committee and Collaboration Enhancement Committee as well as supporting any other collaborative boards. They will work as part of that team to develop and deliver the strategic and operational objectives, at all times ensuring alignment to the values of the partner universities. In particular, the post holder will ensure the effective communication between the College and all relevant stakeholders at UWE Bristol. This will include management of the College of Health, Science and Society as well as the School of Health and Social Wellbeing and UWE’s Collaborative Services team.
The person will be required to consult, report and seek approvals of The College, School, relevant departments and services within UWE Bristol in support of all matters relating to the Memorandum of Agreement.
As a Senior academic leader, the role holder will be expected to make a significant contribution to the Joint Institutes strategic plan and to engage fully in the wider UWE International Educational Services objectives in relation to China. They will represent the UWE College of Hainan Institute at key external networks and develop strategic partnerships to promote the profile and reputation of the Joint Institute.
Strategic Leadership
- As a member of the Joint Institutes executive and all related leadership and partnership boards, embed the University’s values and strategic vision in the wider development of the organisation.
- Lead strategic planning and management of the Joint Institute to ensure excellence across all activities and ensure key metrics are delivered.
- Develop and enhance learning and teaching within the Joint Institute, particularly in relation to UWE taught elements. Ensure alignment in the quality of student experience and outcomes.
- Contribute to the development of a strong research profile, including research income, outputs and impact.
- Embed enterprise and innovation across the Joint Institute, enhancing the reputation as a centre of excellence.
- Build and nurture networks and collaborative working with key external stakeholders to enhance the profile and reputation of the UWE College of Hainan Medical University.
- Contribute to the development of the University’s overall strategy in relation to Asia Pacific and participate in strategic and operational decision making within the framework of UWEIES.
- Act as leader and advocate for equality, diversity and inclusion across the project, leading inclusivity activities to enhance access, participation, continuation and outcomes for all groups.
Operational Leadership
- Lead the academic team in the development and delivery of strategic and operational objectives. Deliver on the overall vision and goals of the Joint Institute, in line with its strategic direction with specific responsibility for the delivery of UWE programmes.
- As a member of the executive, contribute to the strategic planning, and financial management of the UWE College of Hainan Medical University as required.
- Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory and governance requirements, in relation to both partner universities policies, procedures and systems; manage risk and ensure equality and diversity, and a healthy, safe and sustainable work and study environment.
People Leadership
- Provide inspirational leadership to motivate and empower everyone to achieve their best work, maximising the contribution to the overall success of the UWE College of Hainan Medical University. Undertake line management responsibilities for those designated as directly reporting to you.
- Contribute to workforce planning and take responsibility for an Academic and Operational plan to recruit and retain a diverse workforce taking into account emerging skills and new delivery modes including digital and distributed course content. Lead and cultivate a culture of continuous improvement within the UWE College of Hainan Medical University and the development of new ideas and innovation, embedding best practice benchmarking and sharing across disciplines and communities.
- Lead the regular and effective flow of communications both across the Joint Institute and between both partners ensuring that priorities and targets are shared and consulting stakeholders to make informed decisions.
Qualifications/Professional membership
Applicants will need to evidence one or more of the following: Qualified to Doctorate level in a subject relevant and/or with equivalent professional qualification/ demonstrable experience. Professor or Associate Professor working towards Professor status. Membership of a relevant Professional body, preferably in Health or Social Care. Achievement of a recognised teaching qualification in Higher Education. Applications will close on October 25th 2025 and shortlisting will take place prior to interviews scheduled for the same month.
