Johns Hopkins, founded in 1876, is America's first research university and home to nine world-class academic divisions working together as one university.

Johns Hopkins University Press seeks a Digital Production Specialist I who will be responsible for all aspects of preparing digital scholarship (including books, journals, and other content types) for publication on the Project MUSE platform and for supporting quality control workflows. The Digital Production Specialist I will join a team of exceptional professionals committed to bringing the benefits of discovery to the world by providing global access, impact, and influence for the scholarship that we publish and distribute. This position will help to ensure that the Press is a leader in the selection and development of innovative ideas and scholarship, the creation of pioneering technologies to enhance discovery and learning, and the connection of people to the most trusted knowledge from global researchers, scholars, and educators.

The Digital Production Specialist I will process a set amount of routine content, some moderately complex, while reviewing resources, such as training materials, documentation, and other production staff. This position also demonstrates a solid understanding of industry metadata standards and a working knowledge of the production team’s metadata tools and uses these skills to remediate routine metadata errors. This position reports to the Senior Manager, Digital Production.

The Press is committed to honoring every person’s inherent dignity as human beings and making that the foundation of our organizational culture. We proactively find ways to ensure opportunities that promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and access. We strive to publish courageously, giving voice to groundbreaking ideas. We support each other and our stakeholders and envision a future where knowledge enriches the lives of every person. The successful candidate will join a welcoming community that is inclusive and values the contributions and perspectives of individuals from all backgrounds.

  • Ability to manipulate PDF, XML, and EPUB files.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and solve routine problems with files and how they interact with the production system.
  • Resolve Live Agent tickets as assigned.
  • Remediate routine metadata errors.
  • Continue to actively learn about scholarly publishing industry standards (especially those related to metadata and accessibility) through self-guided instruction, formal classes and workshops, and consulting with colleagues.
  • Weave diversity, equity, inclusion and access principles into all aspects of the work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

  • Experience working in the digital scholarly publishing industry, particularly working with XML-based production workflows.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft 365, at least one XML editor, and common desktop publishing software, such as InDesign.
  • Some experience with PDF, XML, and or EPUB manipulation.
  • Familiarity with U.S. and international accessibility standards for digital content.
  • Excellent critical thinking and communication skills.
  • Outstanding problem-solving skills including using analytics to drive decisions.
