Job Description

Summary/objective

Founded in 1956, the fully accredited Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) was founded as a branch unit of Southern University and Agricultural & Mechanical College in Baton Rouge (SUBR). SUNO continues to grow, striving to become better each year. Our campus housing is some of the newest in the New Orleans area. SUNO is an active member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the HBCU Athletic Conference. The University also offers a full Intramural Sports Program. SUNO offers a variety of academic programs that are challenging and that will ultimately prepare its graduates for success after they have earned their diplomas. SUNO seeks students who are intellectually curious from all backgrounds.

The Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) plans, manages and implements a variety of Counseling programs and services to support student academic success and ensures student access to academic and personal counseling from pre-enrollment through completion or transfer. In this role, the Director also provides direct clinical services to both in-person and online students of Southern University at New Orleans. Additionally, the Director develops and delivers targeted outreach efforts and contributes to fostering a supportive academic environment that promotes student wellness and success.

*This position is funded 100% by the Title III-B, Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) federal grant. As such, the Director is responsible for implementing the objectives established in the Title III Program for this federally-funded activity.

Essential functions

  1. Provide oversight of University College Title III Activity to include the expansion of mental health services offered to the students of Southern University at New Orleans.
  2. Provide direct counseling services to University students, including intake, evaluation, counseling, and emergency/crisis management.
  3. Provide consultation to University community members regarding counseling needs.
  4. Develop and provide outreach, programs, events, and initiatives to students, faculty, and staff.
  5. Serve as liaison for the Counseling Center to the University community and community agencies.
  6. Collect data for program coordination.
  7. Keep abreast of developments in professional field, related to student mental health, cultural competency and equitable access to services.
  8. Work cross-functionally and collaboratively across the institution to determine and implement systemic solutions to issues.
  9. Develop and recommend to senior management policies and procedures that better coordinate and enhance student services at the University.
  10. Serve on various University committees, attends related university system meetings.
  11. Other duties as assigned.

Competencies

  • Experience working in a college or university counseling center or other academic environment.
  • Experience working as an integral member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Familiarity working with a culturally informed lens.
  • Experience with the rigors and demands of undergraduate, graduate and professional studies.
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed interventions.
  • Experience treating substance misuse and addictions.
  • Experience in mediation and conflict resolution, work experience within a professional setting.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Experience In program coordination, implementation, and assessment.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and strong conceptual analytical, and integrative thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage personnel, communicate with senior leadership and trustees, and inform University stakeholders.
  • Ability to establish a clear and understandable vision for the Counseling Center.
  • Must embrace, promote, and have a commitment to the mission, values, goals, and plans of Southern University.

Ability to sit/stand/walk at will; Ability to climb stairs; Ability to communicate verbally and in writing; Ability to use a keyboard; and Ability to lift or carry up to 10 pounds.

Required education and experience

  • Master's Degree in Social Work or Counseling.
  • Must be independently licensed or licensed eligible as a psychologist, social worker, or clinical counselor in the State of Ohio, with the ability to supervise in their discipline.
  • License must be achieved within six (6) months of date of employment.

Preferred education and experience

• Doctorate Degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology (PhD or PsyD).
