Job Summary
In consultation with the Dean of the College of the Arts and other
university, museum, and community stakeholders, the Director of
Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum (KCAM) is
responsible for all museum operations, personnel supervision,
development and fundraising efforts, grant-writing initiatives,
financial administration, advocacy for the museum and the arts in a
university context, and the maintenance of positive and productive
relationships with university administrators, faculty, the advisory
board, and the greater community. With strong commitment to shared
governance and consultation with appropriate staff and faculty, the
Director establishes programs including selection and presentation
of exhibitions, and educational programs. Also in consultation with
the Dean, the Director of the University Art Museum is responsible
for developing and implementing the strategic vision and long-range
planning for the museum with particular emphasis on the unique
roles and missions of a contemporary art museum in a university
context.
Key Responsibilities
Effective museum administration: Ensure that the museum follows
all university standards and policies including sound university
financial practices.
Strategic fundraising and development efforts: Lead and
participate in all fundraising and development activities for
KCAM.
Short- and long-term strategic planning and plan implementation
from KCAM. Seek collaborative opportunities with academic programs
and the Long Beach community as a whole.
Effective communications planning: In coordination with KCAM
staff, develop and supervise all museum communications, marketing
and promotional materials including long-range, comprehensive
communications plans. Serve as the KCAM spokesperson in appropriate
museum, college, university, and community settings.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and
qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal
equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
CSU MPP Compensation Summary Range: The MPP Comp
Summary Range for this position is $7,955 - $11,933 per
month.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to provide strong leadership, vision and strategic
direction that acknowledges the roles of a museum within an
academic college on a university campus. Experience developing and
implementing strategic plans in consultation and coordination with
others. Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of curatorial work
including exhibition research, development, installation, and
planning/execution of associated events and activities.
Demonstrated knowledge of standards and best practices for museums
and non-for-profit organizations. Demonstrated success in managing
museum operations, including personnel matters.
Demonstrated ability to supervise, as well as to work successfully
with and professionally support museum staff, volunteers, and
diverse public constituencies .Evidence of success in developing,
managing, and growing an annual operating budget. Strong record of
success in fundraising and audience development. Strong record of
success in grant-writing and resource acquisition activities.
Demonstrated excellence in writing and public speaking. Proven
ability to work effectively with boards, volunteers, and in
community relations and outreach capacities.
Evidence of commitment to educational dimensions of art and museum
interfaces with curricula and university programming. Ability to
communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus
community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures,
and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility,
information security, and non-discrimination policies and
procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university
experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the
university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience
1. Minimum BA in Art, Art History or Museum/Curatorial Studies and
an advanced degree in an appropriate discipline such as a MA in Art
History or Museum/Curatorial Studies, MFA in Studio Art, Ph.D. in
Art History or Museum/Curatorial Studies, M.Arch or MBA Arts
Administration required. Other disciplines will be considered if
aligned with the duties and expectations of the position.
2. Effective and proven background in museum/art center programming
and operations.
3. At least two years in managerial/supervisory positions.
4. Nights, weekends, and other irregular schedules may be
required.
