Director of Academy Strings (Violin or Cello) Faculty
Job Summary
The Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) invites applications from nationally or internationally recognized artist-teachers in violin or cello for Director of Academy Strings, which will include significant studio teaching as well. While this position begins in the 2026-27 academic year, CIM seeks to fill it in time to include individuals in the audition process, starting in early 2026.
In alignment with CIM’s mission, vision, and institutional learning goals, this individual will teach assigned applied violin or cello students in the Conservatory and Academy (pre-college) and, occasionally, the Joint Music Program (in partnership with Case Western Reserve University). As Director of Academy String Studies, this individual will provide leadership and direction in developing curriculum and standards and recruiting string students across all levels of the Academy, from beginner to advanced.
Candidates will demonstrate a proven record of recruiting and teaching outstanding students in a conservatory, university, and/or pre-collegiate or community music school, experience guiding students along their stages of development, and a noted reputation as a performer.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- As Director of Academy String Studies: Build and promote a curriculum, performance standards, events and activities, and assessment points that establish the Academy at CIM and CIM’s Young Artist Program as regional and national destinations for pre-college string students likely to continue their studies at the top collegiate levels, within an environment that supports inclusive, equitable learning for all students. Collaborate with the Admission staff to develop recruitment strategies and audition standards and lead the Academy string faculty in recruiting students at various stages of development, from beginner to advanced. Facilitate placement of new and progressing students into appropriate studios. Maintain regular communication with students, families and staff. Participate in and contribute meaningfully to administrative and faculty meetings, including the Academy Council. Assess students learning and lead program review.
- Empower each student in your studio to perform with technical prowess and informed, compelling artistry in pursuit of a top echelon music career or, for Academy students, in pursuit of study at a top collegiate program, by:
- Comprehensively and sequentially guiding them through their course of applied study during their degree or program at CIM.
- Teaching applied violin or cello lessons and studio classes.
- Preparing students for regular participation in performances.
- Preparing students for curricular assessment requirements.
- Mentoring students along their educational and career paths.
- Maintain national/international visibility, actively recruit prospective students, and participate in all stages of the application, audition, and enrollment process.
- Serve on faculty panels for hearings, juries, recitals, etc.
- As assigned and as appropriate based on one’s background and experience, coach chamber music, teach repertoire classes, lead sectionals, or engage in other related instructional activities.
- Communicate promptly, professionally, and effectively with students, families, faculty, and administration.

Education, Experience and Qualifications
A qualified candidate will possess:
- A master’s degree in violin or cello performance or demonstrated relevant experience.
- A minimum of 10 years of experience teaching promising students of various ages and levels, and a track record of helping them achieve their desired outcomes.
- A reputation as a successful solo, chamber, studio, and/or orchestral performer.
- An awareness of various pedagogical approaches and an ability to apply them to each student’s unique needs and goals.
- An extensive knowledge of a diverse and dynamic repertoire that can inspire and connect with students and audiences from a variety of backgrounds.

Working Conditions
This individual will need to work within their own and students’ demanding schedules to regularly schedule lessons, which may occur in the evenings or on weekends.
