Description
Under the unit leader, the position provides strategic leadership and day-to-day oversight for all learning, tutoring, and academic support initiatives serving student-athletes across all sports.
- Designs, implements, and evaluates comprehensive learning support programs (tutoring, learning specialists, academic skills workshops) that promotes student-athlete success, persistence, and timely graduation.
- Supervises, trains, and mentors learning specialists, tutors, and other academic support personnel assigned to the Academic Center for Excellence.
- In coordination with the Sr. Associate AD for Academic Services, ensures that all student-athletes meet NCAA, Big 12, and institutional eligibility standards.
- Oversees early-alert systems, progress-toward-degree tracking, and structured learning plans for academically at-risk student-athletes.
- Conducts intake assessments to identify learning needs, strengths, and accommodations; facilitate referrals to campus resources as appropriate while providing one-on-one academic coaching focused on study strategies, time management, and self-advocacy skills.
- Serves as the primary liaison for Dart Center and other campus constituents on issues related to student-athlete learning needs.
- Delivers regular academic progress reports and intervention updates to sport programs and department leadership.
- Represents Learning Services and the Department of Athletics on campus committees, professional organizations, and community outreach initiatives.
- Serves as an ambassador for the University of Houston, demonstrating integrity, professionalism, and a student-centered philosophy.
- Identifies and implements innovative strategies to enhance the effectiveness of tutoring, learning specialist interventions, and academic skill development.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (MQ)
Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional disciplines. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related, 4-year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Requires a minimum of three (3) years of directly job-related experience.
