Job Summary:

The Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) for the Department of Pharmacology coordinates policies and procedures and oversees the implementation of research and administrative programs within the Department of Pharmacology. The Director of Finance and Administration oversees and has authority over all administrative functions including finance, grants and contracts, human resources, procurement, information technology and services, official functions, asset and space planning, and day-to-day operations. The Director of Finance and Administration represents the department within the School of Medicine and the University of Colorado Anschutz Campus.

Professional Field

  • Knowledge and understanding of the theories and concepts associated with human resources, accounting, finance, business/public/research administration, or closely related field.

Supervision Received

  • This position reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Pharmacology with a dotted line report to the Senior Associate Dean for Administration and Finance through the School of Medicine Office of the Dean.

Supervision Exercised

  • Provides supervision for administrative staff in the department.

Key Responsibilities:

Oversee and direct all departmental fiscal, human resources, administrative and operational activities.

  • Oversee, direct, and manage all funds of the department, including State appropriations, gift and endowment funds, grant and contract funds, auxiliary and grant release funds.
  • Oversee financial reporting, analysis, forecasting and business planning. Negotiates institutional budgetary support for operational activities, recruitment packages, capital procurement and facility improvement.
  • Develop and maintain, with department leadership, standardized compensation plans for faculty and senior administrators, and implements an annual review of effort, productivity and funding sources for all faculty.
  • Ensure compliance with compensation models, regulations and policies.
  • Partner, collaborate, and provide direction to internal and external stakeholders and partners on financial management, administration, and operations.
  • Engage in development activities related to finding new or expanded funding sources and opportunities.
  • Represent the department to visitors, clients, media and the public and serve as a Public Relations liaison for constituents.
  • Prepare reports such as self-studies, AAMC and NSF reports, and other required documents as requested by the CU Anschutz Chancellor's Office, CU SOM Dean's Office and the Department Chair.
  • Oversee departmental purchasing activities, including delegation of purchasing responsibilities and adherence to purchasing policy, acquisition of capital equipment items and major capital building/renovation, and negotiation of service agreements and contracts.
  • Oversee facilities, research resources and digital information technology infrastructure, to ensure compliance and efficiency of operations.
  • Participate in construction and/or remodeling activities and annual space and equipment inventories to assist in the long-range planning of department operations and research.
  • Participate in planning activities for the department, including long-range and short-range planning.

Work Location: Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in business, business administration, finance, healthcare administration, or a directly related field from an accredited college or university.
  • The position requires extensive, diverse and progressively responsible experience at the management level, including eight (8) years of business administration and fiscal administration experience and four (4) years of professional management experience that must have included fiscal management responsibilities.
  • Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in business, business administration, finance, healthcare administration, or a directly related field.
  • Experience in the University of Colorado system, or a similar academic medical setting.
  • Research administration experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, Schools, Department Directors, Administrators, managers, and CU Medicine.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to apply, diversified financial management skills.
  • Ability to manage funds effectively, from a variety of sources.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply, accepted theories, practices and principles of general management and administration, and possess sufficient advanced knowledge of the workings of an academic health campus to apply these general principles thereto.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in brief, focused and well organized oral and written presentations.
  • Ability to establish work priorities and provide follow through to insure completion of activities, both personally and in subordinates.
  • Ability to plan and organize, implement and coordinate financial and administrative activities, as they apply to the complex workings of the Center/Division. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Thorough understanding of State, University and Sponsor fiscal policies

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $97,000 to $135,000.
