Director of Graduate Education

We are looking for candidates for a unique role providing high-level support to LSA's 2,089 doctoral and 581 master's students. In collaboration with the Research Associate Dean, the Director of Graduate Education provides strategic leadership and administrative oversight for graduate education and student activities in LSA. You will manage multiple responsibilities, including program administration, student support, and critical projects, to promote a quality graduate experience.
Part of LSA's value comes from in-person engagement on the Ann Arbor campus: our classrooms, our labs, our museums, Michigan Stadium, the Diag, and similar locations. To help maintain this experience yet recognize the diverse needs of staff, a hybrid work arrangement is available for this position, with remote work one day a week. When onsite, you will work from the LSA Building.
The target salary for this role is $100,000 to $125,000. A higher salary is possible for candidates who demonstrate a history of job performance that exceeds expectations.
1. Provide leadership and administrative oversight for college-wide graduate education initiatives, advising senior leaders on important decisions, and working closely with the Associate Dean for research and graduate studies.
2. Serve as the primary liaison for LSA, collaborating with student support offices to develop and implement strategies that enhance support for graduate students.
3. Oversee the daily college-level administrative responsibilities of graduate education, including budget management, staff management, and policy implementation.
4. Research and develop new practices related to graduate programs, ensuring they are well-documented and communicated to all partners.
5. Analyze data related to admissions, enrollment, and student outcomes to inform program development and strategic planning.
6. Maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external partners, including the Rackham Graduate School, department administrators, and campus-wide offices.
7. Support LSA's efforts in creating a welcoming and inclusive culture for prospective and current LSA graduate students.
- 7 years of professional experience in higher education, of which at least 3 years are specifically in graduate-level administration.
- Demonstrated experience in a leadership role, including staff management and mentorship.
- Experience managing complex budgets, including financial planning and oversight.
- Ability to navigate, explain, and present complex graduate student information, policies, and procedures to inform decision-making.
- Knowledge of processes and procedures involved in the development and implementation of new academic programs and practices.
- Ability to employ systematic and data-informed approaches to address complex issues, to develop solutions that improve student outcomes, and to inform strategic decisions and administrative processes.
- Familiarity with institutional data systems and reporting tools (e.g., PeopleSoft's Student module or similar enterprise software).
- Demonstrated experience in nurturing relationships with diverse partners, such as faculty, students, and other campus units.
