The Director of Human Resources at Goshen College provides vision, leadership and oversight of all human resources functions, including talent acquisition, employee relations, organizational development, compensation and benefits, performance management, compliance and administration of HR systems. The Director of Human Resources partners with senior administrators, faculty and staff to build an inclusive, supportive and high-performing campus culture.
Essential Functions: (Core Job Responsibilities)
- Strategic leadership of Human Resources
- Serve as the College’s senior HR officer, advising executive leadership on human resources policies, workforce trends and organizational culture
- Align HR strategies with institutional goals and the College’s mission
- Provide leadership for equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives as they relate to HR practices and workplace climate
- Develop, lead and manage priorities, goals and budgets for the HR Office
- Assist the VP for Finance with projects and processes that influence employees as needed
- Compensation, benefits and HR systems
- Collaborate with the Vice President for Finance on
- Implementation and evaluation of compensation and benefit programs to attract and retain top talent
- Conduct market analyses and benchmarking to maintain competitive and equitable pay practices
- Payroll management, compensation schedule and HR information systems, ensuring accuracy, efficiency and data security
- Oversee management of annual employee MOUs and benefit statements. Collaborate with the Vice President for Academic Affairs to oversee the management of teaching faculty MOUs
- Audit new and revised positions; provide recommendations and wage classifications
- Collaborate with the Vice President for Finance on
- Talent acquisition and development
- Oversee faculty and staff recruitment processes to ensure compliance, fairness and competitiveness
- Implement and continuously improve programs for onboarding, professional development and leadership training
- Support career pathways for employees and succession planning for managers
- Oversee and continuously improve performance appraisal systems for administrators and staff, including training for supervisors
- Employee relations and compliance
- Promote a workplace environment that values respect, collaboration and accountability.
- Lead conflict resolution, investigations and grievance processes with fairness and confidentiality in accordance with college policies.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state and local employment laws and regulations, as well as institutional policies
- Serve as Deputy Title IX coordinator for employees. Lead Title IX and Title VI processes when employees are involved
- Oversee and ensure management and employee compliance with Federal OSHA and State Health and Safety laws and regulations
- Collaborate with Information Technology Services on data security and compliance, data management and continuous improvement of systems
- Organizational development
- Foster employee engagement, recognition and wellness programs that enhance workplace satisfaction and retention
- Develop HR policies and procedures that support operational excellence and compliance with applicable laws; e.g., Equal Opportunity, FLSA, FMLA, Title VI, Title VII Civil Rights Act, ADAAA, Title IX, HIPAA, ACA, etc.
- Develop and administer comprehensive training for employees and supervisors, including federally mandated employee trainings
- Remain competent and current on best HR practices in higher education through professional development opportunities and relevant training courses
Supervisory Responsibility:
- Assistant Director of Human Resources
- Payroll Specialist and HR Assistant
- Occupational Safety Specialist
- Other staff and student workers supporting HR
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred, ideally in business, management, human resources
- Minimum of five years related and recent leadership experience in a Human Resources position: experience in a higher education environment is preferred
Skills and Competencies:
Required:
- Strong team leader with an ability to empower others and work in a collegial manner
- Possess excellent analytical and critical thinking skills
- Be a self-starter and capable of working independently
- Understanding of Microsoft Office suite, Google Workspace and relevant HR systems software
- Ability to resolve complex employee relations matters
- Communicate in a clear and concise manner with a wide range of people
- Possess and exercise exceptional judgment and the ability to influence and persuade others
- Be willing to give attention to detail, strive for accuracy and complete tasks
Preferred:
- PHR/SPHR/SHRM certification
- Prior HR management experience, ideally in a higher education setting
- Experience with Jenzabar HR and ADP software
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift light loads (up to 25 pounds)
- Prolonged sitting and use of the keyboard
- Ability to complete primary tasks by viewing computer screen(s) for the majority of any given work day (extensive use of computer technology)
Work Environment/Environmental Conditions:
- Work will primarily take place in a standard indoor office environment
