Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine - Adjunct, Clinical X, Health Sciences Clinical, In Residence Faculty Series
UCSF School of Medicine and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals
Division of Hospital Medicine, Department of Pediatrics
Adjunct, Clinical X, Health Sciences Clinical, or In-Residence Faculty Series
The Division of Hospital Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals is recruiting faculty at the Instructor, Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor ranks in the Adjunct, Clinical X, Health Sciences Clinical, or In-Residence faculty series. Academic rank will be commensurate with experience.
Selected candidates will join a major academic medical center and an established fellowship training program. This position may have clinical responsibilities at the San Francisco, Oakland, or affiliated community hospitals and would actively contribute to the Department's mission of excellence in research, education, and patient care.
Faculty Role in Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM)
PHM faculty play an integral role in educating and training medical students, nurse practitioner students, pediatric residents, and hospital medicine fellows. New faculty members will have access to clinical experiences that align with their interests, while also having the opportunity to develop a path toward academic success. Clinical responsibilities may include inpatient care (day and night shifts, teaching and non-teaching services). Specific preferences for clinical settings will be discussed during the interview process.
Clinical Settings:
Benioff Children's Hospitals General Pediatric Units
Faculty in the General Pediatric Units at Benioff Children's Hospitals provide care for common acute illnesses requiring hospitalization, as well as complex quaternary care for children from across the U.S. PHM faculty work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including nurses, social workers, case managers, pharmacists, dieticians, child life specialists, and subspecialists. Faculty also supervise and mentor a variety of trainees.
Bay Area Community Hospitals
PHM faculty provide care at three Bay Area community hospitals:
- Eden Medical Center (Castro Valley, CA)
- San Ramon Regional Medical Center (San Ramon, CA)
- Washington Hospital Healthcare System (Fremont, CA)
Responsibilities at these sites include pediatric inpatient care, well and sick newborn care, high-risk delivery attendance, ER consultation, and collaboration with regional primary care practices. Shifts are typically 24 hours in-house, with some flexibility for splitting day and night shifts at certain sites. Faculty primarily based at community hospitals will be appointed as academic faculty in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine and have opportunities to pursue academic work. A blended role with clinical work at Benioff Children's Hospitals in San Francisco or Oakland may also be considered.
Benioff Children's Hospitals Hematology-Oncology & Blood & Marrow Transplant (BMT) Units
PHM faculty in the Hematology-Oncology & BMT units serve as front-line providers, working closely with interdisciplinary teams to care for children with complex hematologic and oncologic conditions, including those undergoing bone marrow or stem cell transplants. Faculty collaborate with advanced practice providers (APPs), fellows, and fellowship-trained attendings to manage patient care, make critical medical decisions, and provide hands-on education to trainees. Day shifts involve rounding with a team of bedside nurses, case managers, dieticians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, residents, fellows, and Hematology-Oncology/BMT attendings, while night shifts focus on providing immediate coverage for patient concerns and admissions, with on-call support as needed based on patient acuity. PHM faculty also perform procedures such as lumbar punctures and central line removals, and handle common acute issues like transfusion needs, sepsis, anaphylaxis, and pain management. Faculty dedicated to these units will have opportunities to develop their academic careers within the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, while also contributing to education and clinical care. It may be possible to blend a general pediatric role with Hematology-Oncology & BMT responsibilities, which can be discussed during the interview process.
