The University of Antwerp is a dynamic, forward-thinking European university offering innovative academic education to more than 20,000 students and conducting pioneering scientific research. The Department of Literature in the Faculty of Arts is seeking a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in Modern German Literature and Culture.
Position: You will work on preparing and defending a PhD thesis on "Intersections of Jewish and Working-Class Emancipation in 19th Century German Writing (1830-1860)." Profile: You hold a Master degree in German Literature and/or Jewish Studies or an adjacent field. You have excellent study results, good knowledge of 19th-century German literature and culture, high proficiency in German, and preferably experience in archival work, digital methods, and international contacts.
What We Offer: A doctoral scholarship for one year, renewable up to three years, starting 1 January 2026. The monthly amount is calculated according to university scholarship rates, with additional benefits like ecocheques, Internet allowance, and commuting reimbursement. Work will be at the University of Antwerp’s city campus.
