Why Your Role Matters:

The Technical Support Group (TSG) within the School of Engineering and Technology (SET), UNSW Canberra is looking for a Technical Officer (Mechanical) who will play a key role in technical leadership across the School of Engineering & Technology and UNSW Canberra Faculty to deliver practically competent graduates capable of leading and solving highly complex problems.


The position contributes to the output of the school through the development, maintenance and efficient day-to-day management of teaching and research equipment, infrastructure and services in the Mechanical Workshop and surrounding laboratories. The Technical Officer (Mechanical) will collaborate with academic staff and students to improve learning outcomes as well as routinely support undergraduate teaching.


Additionally, the position will have an active role in managing compliance with WHS requirements. An individual may have and exercise both trade and laboratory skills.


This role reports to the Task Supervisor Scheduler. At the direction of their supervisor, the position may also be required to report to another member of the academic or professional staff regarding a particular task or project.


This position is a broadband level 4/5. The level of appointment will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualification and experience. 

Accountabilities:

As a level 4 you will:

  • Under the direction of the Task Supervisor Scheduler, undertake limited design, manufacturing, fabrication, installation, repair, and modification of mechanical equipment and systems to specifications from drawings, sketches and/or written or verbal instructions.
  • Operate and maintain teaching and research facilities within an assigned area of responsibility and assist with developing/commissioning the components and equipment as required.
  • Develop and maintain strong and collaborative relationships with professional colleagues, academic staff, students, and other stakeholders (from diverse technical/non-technical backgrounds) to generate designs and solutions to engineering problems, transforming ideas and concepts into real-world product or service solutions.
  • Collaborate with undergraduate teaching staff and contribute to the delivery & evaluation of undergraduate laboratory classes by providing technical advice and sharing knowledge with academic staff and students.

In addition to the above accountabilities, as a level 5 you will:

  • Operate and maintain digital manufacturing technologies, equipment, and software to deliver moderately complex mechanical engineering components and solutions.
  • As appropriate, undertake design, manufacturing, fabrication, installation, repair and modification of teaching and research components or systems.

Who You Are:

As a level 4, you will ideally have the following skills and experience:

  • A trade certificate as a Fitter and Machinist; or, a combination of relevant qualifications, education, training and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency in the use of traditional and digital manufacturing technologies, including Computer Aided Machining software (CAM)
  • Ability to work from technical documentation, detailed engineering drawings, scoping documents, freehand sketches, and verbal instructions to produce precision work efficiently.
  • Ability to plan and perform simple to moderately complex tasks in a workshop/laboratory and undertake tasks requiring the use of design, manufacturing/experimental and/or analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (both written and verbal) and interact successfully and respectfully with people from differing backgrounds and technical abilities.

In addition to the above, as a level 5, you will ideally have the following skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated experience and competency in Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) machining and the use of Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) Software, including the ability to design moderately sized systems and produce detailed engineering drawings using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software packages.
