Description
Simpson College is excited to announce that we are accepting applications for the position of the Upward Bound Academic Advisor. This is a fulltime 11-month (mid-August - mid-July) position. The Simpson College Upward Bound program strives to provide individualized assistance and opportunities potential first-generation and or low-income students in grades 9 - 12 to succeed in their high school performance and ultimately in their college pursuits. This is done through intensive advising services, rigorous and nurturing academic support and culturally enriching activities. The program serves 52 students at high schools in Des Moines and Warren County.
Duties/Responsibilities:
The functions listed are essential to the position, however, this is not a fully complete list of all responsibilities.
- Provide academic and post-secondary advisement to project participants based on identified individual needs.
- Assist with planning, development, implementation, and delivery of programs and services.
- Assist with coordinating and designing curriculum for the academic year.
- Serve as a liaison between Upward Bound, community agencies, and target schools.
- Coordinate college visits and summer program activities.
- Recruit students to the Upward Bound program at assigned target schools.
- Recruit, train, and supervise College Mentors.
- Assist with progress reports and documentation.
- Maintain and update social media accounts.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Knowledge of low-income, potential first-generation college and minority students’ academic needs as related to retention, academic success, college preparedness, collegiate admissions and financial aid procedures.
- Experience in assessment and evaluation of students’ needs and progress.
- Experience planning, coordinating, and implementing program activities.
Preferred Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in counseling, education, human services, or related field.
- Experience working with a program for disadvantaged youth or a TRIO/EOP program.
- Experience in teaching, counseling, or academic support services of low-income, potential first-generation college students and/or marginalized populations.
- Preference given to individual who succeeded in overcoming the disadvantages of circumstance like those of the population of the target area of Des Moines and Warren County.
- Experience collaborating with community agencies.
Physical Requirements:
- Valid Driver’s License.
