JOB DUTIES
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director, the Education Specialist - Counseling Component is responsible for developing and implementing the program's counseling services and supervising assigned staff. The Specialist provides academic, career, and financial aid counseling through individual sessions, workshops, and special events, while also planning and leading college exploration activities such as campus tours and academic enrichment trips. In this role, the Specialist works closely with College staff, students, parents, and community partners, and represents the College in all program-related interactions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide academic, career, and financial aid counseling to participants to address barriers to academic success.
  • Advise students on course selection, study skills, and career planning.
  • Conduct intake interviews and follow-up sessions to assess student needs and progress.
  • Consult with parents/guardians, teachers, and school counselors to resolve issues affecting student performance.
  • Actively recruit students by distributing and collecting applications and verifying eligibility in line with program regulations.
  • Make presentations to schools, community organizations, and social service agencies to promote the program.
  • Achieve the required number of student recruits as specified by the Assistant Director.
  • Plan and implement trips, workshops, and enrichment activities to expose students to higher education opportunities and academic experiences.
  • Coordinate activities with staff, consultants, faculty, and volunteers.
  • Assist in the development of flyers, newsletters, and brochures for program promotion.
  • Maintain accurate student and program records and databases.
  • Prepare weekly progress reports and other required documentation.
  • Recommend purchases of equipment, educational materials, and supplies.
  • Attend meetings, conferences, and professional development sessions as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS
This position may require travel to local schools and a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends.
Please note that assigned tasks and responsibilities span both campuses for all MCCC positions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of counseling principles, student development, and academic support strategies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with students, parents, schools, and community partners.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and ability to learn program-related technology tools.
  • Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and timely reports and correspondence.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills; ability to represent the program effectively at schools, meetings, and conferences.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • One to three (1 - 3) years of experience in counseling, academic support, or a related area.
  • Valid NJ or PA driver's license and access to a car required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Experience working with students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Prior work experience in an urban school district or higher education such as a community college.
