 Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Job Title:  Assistant Athletic Trainer

Department: Athletics - Athletic Training

Reports to:   Assistant Director of Sports Medicine and Performance

Status:  Full-Time, Benefit Eligible – 10 month appointment

Location:  Lisle Campus

Position Summary:  Assistant athletic trainer reporting to/supervised by head athletic trainer. Determine the base physical status of all incoming student-athletes through a thorough and complete physical examination. Be proactive with coaches in developing programs that will assist in the prevention of athletic injuries. This includes communication on a consistent basis with coaches regarding injuries, rehabilitation of student-athletes, and all other matters that pertain to the medical safety and welfare of the student athlete regarding their participation. Provide injury rehabilitation services in such a manner that student athletes have minimal absences from their sport activity. Work very closely with the institution’s team physician and/or specialists to provide the necessary medical services. Keep updated medical records on a daily basis. Maintain the personal conduct and appearances that reflects favorably on the institution and the department. Keep the Assistant Director of Sports Medicine and Performance current on all activities, plans, and evaluations relating to projects within assigned areas. Maintain inventory of supplies within the budgetary constraints set by supervisor.

Essential Job Responsibilities:     

1. Provide athletic training services for the University’s athletic department, including attendance at scheduled team practices and home and away competitions as necessary. Schedule and coordinate athletic training staff and students for coverage of all practices and competitions.                                                                         

2. Assist in injury prevention programs, injury evaluations, injury management, injury treatment and rehabilitation, educational programs and counseling for student-athletes.                                                                  

3. Assist in the coordination of scheduling physical examinations and medical referrals for student-athletes to determine their ability to practice and compete. Work in conjunction with the strength and conditioning staff to ensure safety in the design and implementation of fitness, nutrition and conditioning programs customized to meet individual student-athlete needs.

4. Assist in the training and supervision of student athletic trainers. Provide administrative support in the day to day duties of the Sports Medicine program. Manage all administrative aspects if the athletic training room,including maintenance of injury records, treatment logs.

Other Functions:

-Responsible for adherence to all NCAA, Northern Athletics (NACC) and institutional rules and regulations, including eligibility and compliance of student athletes, medical hardship documentation and extension waivers.

-Adherence to all Benedictine University and Department of Athletics policies and procedures. Work independently and creatively within established guidelines, while at the same time functioning as a member of a team.

-Attend departmental and University related meetings and events.

-Maintain self-control and poise; provide an example of professional conduct for team members, officials, opponents and spectators.

-Work in coordination with University offices and departments to coordinate and facilitate Program needs, serve on University, conference and national committees as needed.

-Maintain high level of organization and ability to manage multiple tasks.

-Maintain positive relationships with alumni, parents, students, officials, volunteers and fans.

Required Qualifications:

Education:   Bachelor's Degree Required, Master's Degree Preferred. In Athletic Training or related field.                                                          

Experience:   College athletic training experience preferred.    

Specific Skills:  Basic computer skills, ability to use technology.

Specific Knowledge, Licenses, Certifications:  Yes. NATA- BOC Certification, Illinois Athletic Training Licensed or eligible, CPR/AED Certified. Possession of a valid BLS CPR/AED certificate or equivalent is required at the time of application and must be maintained throughout employment in this classification.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to handle varying levels of stress while maintaining professional demeanor. Possible lifting, bending, walking, kneeling, stretching, and stooping. Frequent districtwide and statewide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours; outdoor exposure to sun/heat or cold weather.

Ability to speak clearly so listeners can understand. Understand the speech of another person.

See details of objects that are less than a few feet away or are more than a few feet away. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. General Customer service and office environment. Lifting up to 50 lbs, assisted patient transport.

The following of campus specific guidelines for pandemic protocols are required.

Travel (If applicable): Yes. Minimal.

Supervisory Responsibility (if applicable):  Yes. Preceptor for undergraduate clinical students, Supervisor for federal work study students, supervisor for sport and exercise science interns.

Working Conditions: General office and outdoor environment. Weight room/athletic training area and or gym also.

Training: As a University employee you are required to complete all University-specific and/or OSHA related training to fulfill your job duties. Specific training will be conducted online or in person. Employees must complete all trainings required by Benedictine University.
