Departmental Overview

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 280 staff members and coaches, and sponsors 30 varsity sport programs that support more than 850 student-athletes annually within the NCAA.

Responsibilities

  • Leads medium complex strategic initiatives on behalf of the Co-Athletic Directors, including revenue and expense benchmarking, football TV viewership tracking and analysis, and department-wide data assessments.
  • Develops and synthesizes data into accessible reports, dashboards, and graphics for executive-level review. Manages cross-campus collaborations, including feasibility analyses for academic program development benefiting student-athlete retention.
  • Streamlines operational processes such as charter- flight approval workflows in partnership with Compliance, campus buyers, Legal Affairs, and the Chancellor's Office.
  • Drafts weekly executive updates from the Co-Athletic Directors to the Chancellor, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and alignment with campus priorities.
  • Supports senior staff with strategic planning, communication, and execution of critical department-wide initiatives.
  • Serve as Athletics liaison to the Chancellor's Office and Student Union regarding the transition, coordination and management of seven spirit groups from Athletics oversight to Student Union management.
  • Coordinates closely with Marketing and Game Presentation to plan and implement on-field performances and fan-experience activations.
  • Works with senior staff and sport administrators on meeting preparation, scheduling, agenda development, materials creation, and post-meeting summaries. Assists with senior staff hiring processes, including candidate itineraries, travel coordination, panel organization, and campus visit logistics.
  • Collaborates with various units, including Compliance, Business Office, Development, Sports Medicine, Sports Information, and Marketing, to support ongoing administrative and operational functions.
  • Supports major Athletics events such as Student-Athlete Graduation, NCAA Championships, Welcome Back events, and parent/family engagement programming.
  • Leads Department-wide events like National Championship week, All-Staff meetings, and other celebratory events (like new hire press conferences).
  • Support new hires in their department orientation to ensure they have a solid first impression of the new employer. Leads several of the new hire initiatives, like introductory meetings, campus tours, and integration with staff.
  • Conducts the annual Athletics Gender Equity Review and presents findings to the Co-Athletic Directors, Deputy Campus Counsel, and OPHD.
  • Supports systemwide, campus, NCAA, and ACC committee tasks and information requests as assigned. Coordinates PRA requests and contract-related workflows with Legal Affairs and internal units.
  • Participates in leadership development programs (e.g., WLC, ELP). Supports special assignments, working groups, and departmental initiatives as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the organization's processes, protocols and procedures.
  • Knowledge of federal regulations such as FERPA.
  • Thorough knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Solid analytical / problem-solving skills.
  • Political acumen and sensitivities to the differing perspectives and political circumstances within all levels of the organization as well as the Office of the President and external constituencies.
  • Strong service orientation.
  • Advising and counseling skills.
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Ability to use high-level discretion and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Solid skills in problem identification.
  • Strong knowledge of intercollegiate athletics operations, issues that arise within college sports, higher education structure, data analysis, and organizational processes.
  • Advanced skill in synthesizing complex information into executive-ready reports and presentations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including interacting professionally with senior campus leaders, coaches, students, and external partners.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills; ability to manage multiple competing priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive or high-profile matters.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across diverse units and build effective working relationships.
  • Ability to project manage events, projects and efforts in conjunction with a variety of interested stakeholders
  • Proficiency with spreadsheet tools, data visualization, and common office software.
  • Must maintain current knowledge of NCAA, ACC, and institutional rules and regulations and avoid any violations.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $78,930 - $126,961.76

  • This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
