EHS Technician
At Wentworth, the Office of Environmental Health & Safety is responsible for providing assistance to departments and individuals at Wentworth who may impact health, safety, or environmental regulatory compliance. EHS provides this assistance through training programs, program development and implementation, technical support, inspections, and emergency response services.
The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Technician position reports to and supports the Director of EHS in executing the EHS mission. The successful candidate will need to provide professional service to the campus, act with integrity, build strong partnerships throughout campus, and be committed to continuous excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
- Chemical Inventory Management: 25%
- Ensure daily management of campus-wide chemical inventory systems.
- Physically handling, inspecting, and managing both lab and non-lab chemical inventories.
- Perform inventory and re-inventory tasks to ensure an accurate chemical inventory.
- Ensure that safety data sheets are maintained for every chemical in inventory.
- Assist with developing reports from the inventory system as needed for compliance.
- Hazardous Waste Management: 25%
- Daily management of the hazardous waste program in compliance with MADEP and RCRA regulations.
- Assist the campus with compliance with all waste (chemical, biological, and universal).
- Perform routine inspections of the hazardous waste and regulated medical waste program.
- Track performance of the hazardous waste program through key metrics.
- OSHA & Laboratory Compliance: 25%
- Prepares for and conducts inspections to ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations. Documents and reports findings to necessary stakeholders.
- Assist with performing ventilation assessments & testing at required frequencies.
- Assist with performing lab emergency equipment assessments & testing at required frequencies.
- Assist with developing and providing a variety of compliant safety training topics to the campus community.
- Assist in the completion of hazard/risk assessments, and development of programs to minimize/eliminate the hazards/risks.
- Fire Safety Compliance: 15%
- Assist with fire extinguisher inspection and maintenance including maintaining an accurate inventory of devices. Assist in the development of a needs assessment.
- Assist with the preparation of permits required by local and state jurisdictions.
- Prepares for and conducts fire safety inspections to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Emergency Response & Preparedness: 10%
- Assist with emergency preparedness as needed.
- Attendance at training and preparedness exercises will be required.
- Assist with hazardous material spill or incident response.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED and 2-years of related work experience.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record per Wentworth’s policy on Vehicle Use.
- Candidate must demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills with an aptitude for problem solving and customer service.
- Candidate must be reliable and able to work independently with little direct supervision while performing routine job duties.
- Candidate must have the ability to exercise discretion, use good judgement, and act quickly in emergency situations.
- Candidate will be required to complete and maintain OSHA required medical evaluations for job duties including those required for respirator use.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate's degree in a related field and 1-year related work experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Chemistry, Engineering, Biology, STEM etc.).
- Knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety principles/regulations.
- Knowledge and understanding of hazardous waste management regulations.
- Knowledge and understanding of chemical handling best practices.
Work Environment:
- Candidate must be able to work a normal on-site work schedule of 37.5 hours per week.
- Must be able to work on-site 5 days per week Monday through Friday.
- Occasional travel for training/professional development.
- Occasional response to campus for after-hour or weekend incidents.
- Candidate must be able to access all areas of campus including climbing ladders, ramps, and stairs.
- Candidate must be able to carry up to 50 pounds and move heavy containers (e.g., 55-gallon drums) while using appropriate assistive devices.
- Candidate must be able to work at a computer workstation for extended periods while preparing reports or other documentation required for the position.
