Position Summary

Join the Ramily! Winston-Salem State University ( WSSU ) is seeking an experienced Electrician to join the Facilities Maintenance team.

The Electrician position is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical power, lighting, control, and communication systems in all campus buildings: academic, administrative, and residential. Employees must work ‘on call’ during the appointed dates and times when requested. This also includes callback work if needed.

Responsibilities of the Electrician include:

  • Performing inspections of electrical system equipment and facilities to assess condition, identify maintenance needs, and recommend repair priorities
  • Installing, maintaining, and repairing secondary electrical systems and related equipment
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting electrical components such as conduit, wiring, electrical panels, breakers, switchgear, magnetic starters, disconnects, and motors
  • Troubleshoot and repair control systems, including temperature controls, regulators, humidity controllers, sensors, pneumatic control valves, and regulators
  • Completing scheduled preventive and predictive maintenance on emergency generators and automatic transfer switch gears.
  • Conducting electronic diagnostics, testing, and repairs on generator systems and related equipment.
  • Repairing and maintaining lighting systems, including fixtures, ballasts, switches, and receptacles
  • Collaborating with fellow technicians and other departments to ensure seamless operation of all building systems
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, and campus stakeholders
  • Maintaining records of repairs and maintenance performed
  • Managing work orders in Team Dynamix
  • Adhering to safety procedures at all times and employing protective equipment when necessary to ensure a safe and healthy living, learning, and working environment

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

Facilities is responsible for overall planning, design, construction and maintenance of university facilities. Facilities Operations is responsible for maintenance services. The maintenance department is responsible for providing preventive and corrective maintenance on all university systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical and carpentry.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Trade school certification or four years of equivalent hands-on electrical experience
  • Electrician’s license
  • Experience working in a university or large institutional facilities environment
  • Skill in troubleshooting, testing, and performing preventive and corrective maintenance on generators and electrical systems using electronic diagnostic tools, meters, and test equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation to support installation, maintenance, and repair activities.
  • Working knowledge is required of all applicable codes, safety precautions and methods of installation and repair.

Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies

Competency: Knowledge - Technical (50%)

Applicant must have knowledge in the function and installation of conductors, insulators, transformers and circuit breakers. Experience with blueprint reading and interpreting complex technical diagrams, and schematics. ON CALL “ Employee must work “on call” during the approved appointed scheduled dates and times when requested. This also includes on callback work if needed. ”

Competency: Problem Solving (10%)

Applicant needs to be able to use diagnostic devices such as multimeters, ammeters, voltmeters and thermal scanners to idetify and troubleshoot system failures. The troubleshooting process is to gather information, understand the malfunction, isolate the fault, test components, repair and verify.

Competency: Coordination - Work (10%)

Applicant must be able to utilize the work order system in order to coordinate prioritized projects with co-workers and vendors.

Competency: Communication (10%)

Clarifies the purpose and importance of directives, instructions, and messages; presents information in a clear and concise manner. Seeks input, listens and checks for mutual understanding; asks for and provides clarification as needed. Explains purpose and procedures of facilities maintenance projects in language easily understood by the customer.

Competency: Safety and Health Compliance (10%)

Identifies and resolves potential safety problems and unsafe work practices. Demonstrates to employees and others, safe ways to perform job tasks or the use of equipment. Informs supervisor of unusual safety concerns and makes recommendations for resolution. Determines appropriate protective equipment based on established standards. Regularly assesses site and shop operations for safety.

Competency: Client/Customer Service (10%)

Identifies options, develops solutions, and takes action when responding to customer requests. satisfies individual customer requests while balancing multiple priorities. Assesses or checks with customer to ensure solution meets request. Develops effective working relationships with internal/external customers vendors, subcontractors, etc.) that further the work unit’s goals. Reviews customer requests and seeks clarification as needed.
