Corning Community College is currently seeking a Tenure Track Faculty Member for our English Department starting in the Fall 2026 Academic Year. The English Instructor will participate in the Promoting Recruitment, Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion and Growth Plus Community College (PRODiG+CC) program. PRODiG+CC is an initiative supported by SUNY system aiming to:
(1) increasing the number and share of excellent diverse community college faculty committed to advancing the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion;
(2) strengthen the pipeline for retention and support of these candidates;
(3) hiring qualified faculty directly into tenure-track positions to support the community colleges' efforts to build an educated workforce in the state.
Tenure-Track Faculty Members in the English Department are expected to teach a range of undergraduate courses, including foundational courses in English, College Composition I and II, Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communications and upper-level coursework in literature, poetry and creative writing along with the possibility of special topics courses aligned with faculty expertise and student interest. Faculty are responsible for teaching a minimum of 15 credit hours per semester.
Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, preparing and updating course materials, grading assignments and assessments, and holding office hours for each course taught to support student learning. Faculty are also expected to advise students on academic progress and career goals.
Courses may be offered in-person, asynchronous online, or synchronous online, depending on departmental needs. Tenure-track faculty are expected to organize, maintain, and revise course content as needed to ensure instructional effectiveness and alignment with departmental and institutional standards.
Occasional meetings at different CCC locations and in the community may be required; travel to conferences and/or recruiting events may be required. Travel to local (within 60 miles) high schools may be required. Prolonged time sitting/standing working with computers and monitors, ability to walk/move across campus including walking up and down stairs, ability to lift up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds, repeated motions may include keyboard typing. Typical classroom, laboratory, office, and indoor building environments, occasional outdoor activity may be required. Incumbent must perform the essential duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation. Essential Functions:
Teaching Duties (60%) -
- Maintain current course content and up-to-date teaching methods
- At the start of the semester, provide students with a course outline and requirements for fulfilling the objectives of the course. This should include information about grading policies, class attendance policy, research projects and/or term paper requirements, and the nature of quizzes and examinations
- Be responsible for assuring accuracy of course content as defined in the catalogue
- Meet classes as scheduled and dismiss each class promptly
- Teach at off-campus locations, if need arises
- Facilitate curriculum development
- Develop community outreach activities
- Utilize Microsoft Office and other relevant computer and software programs/skills to develop computer data base/system for program assessment, data collection, evaluation and potential accreditation
- Engage in professional development activities offered through the Center for Teaching and Learning and other external opportunities
- Collaborate with Workforce Development and other Academic Departments regarding noncredit and other professional training certifications and education
Advising Duties (20%) -
- Post and maintain regular and reasonable office hours
- Refer students to appropriate college services for specialized assistance
- Write recommendations for students who need references for work or for transfer to another college
- Serve as an advisor to a student organization
Committee Services (15%) -
- Attend graduation exercises, unless formally excused by the Associate Dean of Instruction and the Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs
- Become involved in, and contribute to, the improvement of the College and its community through such services as sponsorship of forums, seminars, workshops and conferences
- Participate in all College-wide workshops and fall and spring start-up programs unless excused by the Associate Dean of Instruction or VP/Dean of Academic Affairs
- Participate in governance committees as assigned
Other Duties As Assigned (5%) -
- Complete other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Instruction of the Liberal Arts and Professional Studies Division
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively in team environment
- Ability to foster a collaborative atmosphere among students, faculty, and staff
- A strong working knowledge of English and Communications
- A strong technology proficiency, experience with Banner, Brightspace, and textbook applications is preferred
- Demonstrates commitment to accomplishing work in an ethical, efficient, and cost-effective manner
- Ability to effectively convey information verbally and in writing, demonstrate effective listening skills, and display respect for and openness to other people’s ideas and thoughts
Minimum Qualifications:
- Eligibility to work in the United States without a visa sponsorship. If you currently need sponsorship or will need it in the future to maintain employment authorization, you do not meet the eligibility requirements for this position.
- Masters in English, or relevant terminal degree such as Literature, Composition, Rhetoric, or Creative Writing from an accredited institution completed prior to start date; and
- Demonstrate personal, academic, and/or work experience engaging with diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or a commitment to facilitating and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the campus community. Such experience may include, but is not limited to, an academic/scholarly track record focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion; work, volunteer/ unpaid/community service; or related experience/expertise in serving underserved or vulnerable areas and/or populations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Teaching experience at a Community College
- Experience in the field of English
Preference will be given to candidates who are:
- Current SUNY students, alumni, and/or Fellows.
- From a low-income background (e.g., Pell-eligible as undergraduates), were first-generation college students (students whose parents have not earned a bachelor’s degree), have overcome adversity, are AmeriCorps alumni, or are veterans.
